Joe. Posted 24 September 2006 Posted 24 September 2006 What is really happening to the club that was once consistently finishing in the top half of the premiership and winning the odd trophy? It's so sad to see us struggling in the championship when really with the finances and squad we had a few years ago we should be in the premiership. I think at the end of the day it all started with the Peter Taylor era. If we had 5m to spend on one player now, or even a few I'm sure we could challenge easily for the championship title. Think back to July 2000 when we signed Ade Akinbiyi for our club record 5m. Now even 5m nowadays can get you a very decent player. I think Akinbiyi was the division 1 top scorer at the time so you can see Taylor's motives for signing him. So why couldn't he make the step up? 5 million quid wasted on a total donkey. The words cow's arse and banjo spring to mind. Also, the 1.6 million signing of Dennis Wise. What an arsehole- what a waste of money. Two other names- Matt Jones- signed for 3 million and Trevor Benjamin (now playing his trade for Peterborough in lowly League Two- that shows you something doesn't it?) signed for 1 million. To us nowadays that is a great deal of money. These two both were nothing special and were probably on a good wage too. All the players we had were on a good wage. This was probably the reason for us having nothing at all to spend this season on transfers. Slowly our better players started to leave. Neil Lennon left for Celtic and was shortly followed by Steve Guppy, rejoining the messiah Martin O'Neill. Robbie Savage left for Brum, Gary Rowett for Charlton and also the very promising winger Matt Piper who was destined for great things at this club. Finally the influencial Muzzy Izzet left for Birmingham in 2005 and since then we have never found our feet. Izzet was the premiership's highest assist player despite us still being relegated that season. With a combination of shocking manager's and poor signings this club has hurtled down the league like a rocket. Since we hired Craig Levein, the worst manager in this club's history we will never again look like challenging for promotion. With his signings such as Alan Maybury, Elvis Hammond, Mark De Vries, Joe Hammil, Peter Gilbert, Patrick Gerrbrand, Rab Douglas and the terrible Momo Sylla, we will never recover from his reign. Even though I am very grateful for what Rob Kelly di for the club at the tail end of last season, I am unsure to whether he is the right man to take us forward..... Come on you foxes!
lildave3 Posted 24 September 2006 Posted 24 September 2006 We got 3 million for Piper, but what or who did we spend it on, anybody know?

Sparky Posted 24 September 2006 Posted 24 September 2006 sounds good... hope he is still a good player- we desperately need a right winger whose any good either as back up to low or to even replace him in the starting XI apparently his fitness is close to be as it should but he is need of plenty of games to get his match fitness up
Head Honcho Posted 24 September 2006 Posted 24 September 2006 apparently his fitness is close to be as it should but he is need of plenty of games to get his match fitness up As far as I'm aware, lack of fitness is a prerequisite for being picked isn't it?
