Bung enquiry.. are we involved?

Lord Stevens' inquiry into football corruption has been extended by two months to investigate 39 transfers.

The former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police examined 362 transfers which took place between 1 January 2004 and 31 January 2006.

The 39 transfers involved eight clubs and need "further investigation" before Lord Stevens will "sign them off".

After reporting his findings to the Premier League, he added: "This interim report remains a work in progress."

A total of 29 clubs have been members of the Premier League during the period covered by Lord Stevens' inquiry.

Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, said Watford, Sheffield United and Reading - who were promoted to the Premiership in the summer - were not part of the investigation.

"Those four clubs are no longer party to the inquiry, but the 25 clubs which remain are," Scudamore said.

"Those 25 clubs wished to express solidarity with their colleagues, and there was no call for the eight clubs to be identified and therefore - mathematically what would be the remaining 17 clubs - to be released from the inquiry."

apologies if this has already been mentioned but I couldn't see it anywhere else BUT I can't help feeling that we may be involved in this at some level and the fact that Dave Bassett was director of football may have something to do with this!!! we signed a few players that January including Freund, Guppy, Morris and I can't help feeling that the other other Harry would have liked a Bung as well!!! being from the old school and that all our signings that season seemed to come from "Harrys Contacts"

I realise that we didn't pay transfer fees but signing on fees and agents fees obviously did!!

*** this is of course all an opinion with no facts or evidence available to comfirm this ***

You might want to stick an allegedly or two in there. I can see where you're coming from with the Bassett thing though and you'd have thought some clubs might be whiter than white (Arsenal and Charlton spring to mind), meaning the net closes that little bit more on the eight from twenty-five.

why would charlton be whiter than white? Just because Curbishly come across as a nice guy doesnt mean he doesnt want a swimming pool in his back garden

After reading an article in the Sunday press about Lord Stevens being given access to information from a seven year inquiry by French Police into football corruption, the Bill Anderson view about the controversy being basically all wind, piss and over-reactive storm in a teacup is looking decidedly weak.

Proof might remain difficult but the combined efforts of experienced, thorough and determined investigators will overlap and will flush ever more dishonesty out.

To even suggest it would all be normal practise in industry is to avoid admitting the undoubted truth, that there are people in and around our game who are insatiably greedy, rotten to the core, and probably guilty of fraud or of wrongdoing connected to fraud.

The challenge is not whether crime has been committed but whether it can be proved. Either way there's a good chance that football will become well aware in the months ahead exactly where the fingers of suspicion are pointed - if they don't admit to knowing now.

If they weren't so rich there'd be some worried men around the game right now. Worried men lose their nerve.

Whether football will be able to close its ranks tightly enough in this case is extremely doubtful - but it'll try I imagine.

Rather In the same way that certain people in the NHS do so much to keep a lid on controversy within the health service. One doctor is reported to be virtually persona non grata after revealing the truth of how HNS hospital time/money was being used for private medicine.

Probably belongs in General but just have to say, this is so true. I am aware of examples of this going on all the time where I work and I bet Phube would say the same.

It's okay, I'm not important enough to be listened to and I'm persona non grata anyway.. :D

I think the chances of an investigaton on these deals is remote as it really needs and overseas deal to open the floodgates of possibility.

In any case all, the old school managers like Dave Bassett got a lobotomy from the Inland Revenue after the George Graham scandal so would be pretty stupid to still be doing it. So Dave Bassett, defintely no!
