A Nasa astronaut donned a space nappy so she could drive 900 miles without a break - to confront her love rival. Lisa Nowak, who last flew into space in July, was determined to take on Colleen Shipman as soon as possible. So the US Navy Captain kitted herself out with a wig, trenchcoat and Nasa nappies to help her cross the desert without having to stop.

But far from fighting for her man, Nowak will now face the dock after being charged with attempted kidnap.

Texas on Monday and raced to Orlando, Florida, to meet Ms Shipman as she stepped off a plane.

As Ms Shipman approached her car, she told officers she had noticed someone following her. She says Nowak, dressed in her disguise, tried to get into the car and asked for a lift.

Ms Shipman refused, but rolled down the car window when Nowak started crying.

Nowak then sprayed a chemical into the car, according to arrest documents.

When police officers arrived, they watched Nowak throwing away a bag containing a wig and air rifle.

During a later search of the astronaut and her hotel room, officers found a steel mallet, a knife, pepper spray and emails sent between Ms Shipman and Navy Commander William Oefelein.

Nowak told police that her relationship with Commander Oefelein was "more than a working relationship, but less than a romantic relationship".

A Nasa spokesman said that Nowak remained an astronaut and while he could not remember the last time an astronaut was arrested, there were no rules against fraternising among members of the space corps.

If convicted of attempted kidnapping, Nowak could face life in prison.
