Despite me not really following the Riders it's still good to hear. It's never nice to see any team go out of business.

especially not after 40 years....

no doubt the council and the merc will be saying how wonderful it is, despite contributing, in their own ways, to the clubs demise....

It may not concern most of you, (no disrespect) but i thought it would be known that Leicester Riders are to participate in the BBL next year :D

Leicester Riders

As a big fan of the Riders I can tell you that unfortunately this isn't the case. The story that you found on the official site is months old. Since then it was announced only last week that the club's future was again in danger. A fans' meeting has been called for Tuesday 28th August at 7pm in the Tigers Bar at the Leicester Tigers' ground. The meeting is open to all supporters, potential parteners and interested parties, so if you are able to come along then it would certainly be much appreciated.

RIDERS ARE RESCUED

Leicester Riders have landed a new sponsorship deal with Jelson Homes.

Coupled with a tremendous response from the club's fans, the deal secures Riders' participation in this season's British Basketball League and gives a solid base to build a secure future.

The deal means the club called the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders for the 2007-08 season.

The club had a fantastic response from the supporters at a meeting on Tuesday night and, as well as their pledges of help and support, they also played a significant part in securing the deal with Jelson.

"We recently became aware of Riders' plight and wanted to see how we could help,'' said Jelson's managing director Robert Jelley. "When we went to the fans' meeting and saw the dedication and commitment of the Riders supporters, we couldn't wait to get involved.''

Jelley added: "We saw what this team means to the community and we wanted to be a part of it.''

The deal, one of the most financially substantial in the club's history, will allow for the establishment of a community development programme which is integral to the long-term future of the club.

"This has turned out to be a fantastic week for the club,'' said Riders spokesman Mike Steptoe.

"The response we got from our supporters has been brilliant and we will continue to need that commitment from them in the year ahead.

"And the deal with Jelson Homes is probably one of the most significant in the club's 40-year history, we're really excited about the partnership with them.''

The club are also delighted that they have almost hit their target of season-ticket sales thanks to an overwhelming response from supporters in the last three days.

Riders can now set about assembling a side to take on the campaign which begins in a month's time.

I haven't followed the Riders since I moved out of the area years ago. I didn't realize that times were so hard but it looks like things are looking up.
