Police made a frantic search of Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park ground shortly before Iain Dowie's controversial return to the club after a man said he was going to shoot the former Eagles boss.

Officers were deployed moments before kick off for the Crystal Palace versus Coventry match after a call was made to the club's reception with reports that a man was sat in the Arthur Waite stand with a firearm.

It is understood the man told surrounding spectators he planned to shoot Dowie.

Police were unable to find the man who made the threat but security at the acrimonious game was cranked up to red alert and Dowie was flanked by two burly bodyguards throughout the match.

Fans remained unaware of the drama and continued to heckle and boo the man who was responsible for leading the team from the bottom of the Championship to the Premiership.

Dowie's return to Selhurst Park on September 18 was the first after his public fallout with Simon Jordan and his appointment at Palace rivals Charlton Athletic.

The pair parted company in May 2006 by mutual consent after Dowie told Jordan that he wanted to return to the north to spend more time with his family.

Mr Jordan launched a legal case when just eight days later Premiership club Charlton unveiled Dowie as their new manager.

One fan told the Croydon Guardian: "There are a lot of mixed feelings surrounding Iain Dowie. Some fans remember the good times when he guided us to promotion, but others solely remember how he shafted the club by leaving, saying he wanted a break from the game and just a matter of weeks later taking over at Charlton."

The fan joked: "Personally, if I had a gun I'd probably shoot him."

Dowie was ordered to pay Mr Jordan almost £1million but has since won the right to appeal the decision and a case is due to be heard in the new year.

A Croydon police spokesman said: "I can confirm that prior to the match commencing police received an anonymous call stating that somebody was going to be in Arthur Waite Stand and was going to cause harm to the manager, Mr Dowie.

"The Gold Commander assessed the risk and spoke with the manager directly. Added security measures were put in place and the match passed without incident."
