cambridgetim Posted 9 April 2005 Share Posted 9 April 2005 Hey all, Over the past 3 years or so Cambridge United have been in a downward spiral, not just on the pitch, but off it as well. The board room have made a series of bad decisions, andcontinue to jepordise the future of our club. 18 months ago, fans were forced to raise £100k in just 4 weeks to pay off the remainder of a bank loan payment and keep the club alive - we did that, just to be kicked in the teeth as the club also sold our best player, Dave Kitson (now Reading hotshot). After a year of cutting various other costs, this autumn the club were faced with massive debts, so to the fans' displeasure they sold our stadium - the Abbey - to a company named Bideawhile, owned by director of Cambridge United John Howard, for £1.92m. United were to rent out the stadium season by season, while there was a buy-ouy clause in place so that Cambridge could buy the stadium back if they raised that amount of money by a certain number of years. The board claimed that that money should have kept us in the black for 2 years - the money lasted 3 months. We have rushed the sale of teenage keeping sensation John Ruddy to Everton to take place at the end of the season, the fee being paid up front which will keep us in business until the end of the season, however, with more and more debts it will still be very likely that we will go into administration, or even liquidate. Yet, we thought we had a saviour! Businessman and director Johnny Hon offered to buy the Abbey back to give it to the club, and placed a £2.2m offer to Bideawhile. That is nearly £300k more than what they bought it for, a good profit. However, John Howard rejected this bid saying it was "not in the best interests of his company or the football club". Pure total rubbish. Howard, the traitor, wants Cambridge to liquidate, so he can knock down the Abbey and sell the land for housing, a development which would make him even richer than he already is. He is killing our football club! With the stadium back we wouldn't have to pay big renting fees, and, sitting rock bottom of League 2 and the Conference beckoning, we will most definately be liquidated if we do not get our ground back. Please please please could you ALL sign this petition to Save the Abbey, and save Cambridge United. Nobody wants to see a fotball club go out of business, whether it be your local team or your biggest rival. Please just go to the link and sign your name as it says. http://www.petitiononline.com/langers7/ Thank you all

Simon Posted 11 April 2005 Share Posted 11 April 2005 Living just down the road from the Abbey Stadium it really hacks me off that clubs like Cambridge are having things like this done to them. To be honest I smelt a rat when the bloke first brought the ground and it seems my fears have now been confirmed. Where do you go from here?
