Jordan Posted 2 November 2008 Posted 2 November 2008 Watching this one on TV now. Most of the coverage is following the women's race, which started 30 minutes before the men. They're 22 miles in and your girl Paula Radcliffe has been in control from the start--right now there are only 40-year old Ludmila Putrova is at her shoulders but I don't think her or anybody else can outlast Paula. She pushed a tough pace in a strong headwind during a long, flat stretch in Brooklyn and I think the others are starting to feel the pain from that. The men have just hit 1st Ave. in Manhattan--a noisy, fun spot in the race--with eight of them weaving in and out of the lead pack. I hope that will be a fun finish. The NYC marathon is an awesome race, going through all five boroughs of the city. I'd love to run it one day... I know some others that have (and are running it today) and I'd love to join that group ... but for now, I just hope I can finish my half-marathon in Philadelphia three weeks from today because I'm running poorly lately.

A mate of mine ran in this a couple of years ago. I've been to New York on many occasions but never for the Marathon. Wish I had the stamina to attempt it.
Jordan Posted 2 November 2008 Author Posted 2 November 2008 2:23:55 for Paula... 2nd NYC in a row, 3rd total, 8th win in 10 marathons. Best ever? Jesus, she's even running around celebrating after that. Hard-luck Goumri has pulled ahead of dos Santos with about two miles to go and looks like he'll take it for the men. Brooklyn-born Kara Goucher finishes third in her marathon debut, first American to finish on the podium in NYC since '94. Yay. Damn, we used to have some nasty marathoners in the USA, but it's rough going for us in the last couple of decades. EDIT: Damn, dos Santos goes crazy and flies past Goumri with less than a mile to go! What a win! And more heartbreak for Goumri: I think that guy has finished top five in a dozen marathons but only won one, his first, about 10 years ago. He heard of a half-marathon in Norway with prize money, so he flew by himself over there to run only to find out that only the marathon had prize money. So he ran that one instead and won with a time of 2:30:54, but didn't win anything because the prize money would only be awarded if the winner finished under 2:30!
AmericanScott Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 Hey up Jordan. Good to see our Rangers doing the bussiness this season. Can't believe it's been 14 years since the Stanley Cup.
