Joe. Posted 5 February 2009 Posted 5 February 2009 I know many don't really care for it and neither do I to be honest, this is just more of a principals thing really. I was reading an article about this in the paper yesterday, and it seems the sport is following the trends of other sports. For example, it said that games were to be played in 5 different countries next season. For a sport which takes the majority of its following from the North of England, to spread to five countries just goes to show the desperation the sport has resorted to for a wider audience. The Catalan Dragons (from Perpignan) play in the Super League for ****s sake! Kind of reminds me of game 39 and all that nonsense. Secondly, out of 14 teams, there will be an 8 team play-off instead of last season's 6. This is supposed to make it better from a fan's perspective, but a playoff including over half the tems in the league?! Madness. Just another example of the way sport is changing for the worse.
Fosse Boy Posted 5 February 2009 Posted 5 February 2009 Totally agree. As a sport I'm actually quite fond of Rugby League, but all those factors plus this stupid new three year license they've brought it (pretty much akin to franchising, i.e. no promotion/relegation) means that I won't be watching as much of it this year. The wrong people are controlling sport nowadays and from what I can see, it's only going to get worse.
Ultra Posted 10 February 2009 Posted 10 February 2009 But Sky's involvement has helped Rugby League no end - by raising standards and attracting a wider fanbase. Not that I saw any of the Super League matches at Welford Road, though..

Its the same as they do it in the NRL, works a treat over there makes it a whole lot more competitive as oppose to one or two teams winning it every year. Granted the next couple of seasons salford and celtic will be whipping boys but it gives them a chance to build a team instead of going up and down like a yoyo. In the long run it will pay off. But to be fair the new playoff system off higher rank teams picking opponents is a load of bs

Sure, for entertainment value they're brilliant but I feel they totally detract from the sporting merit of the competition.

But i'm a huge basketball fan so used to having that sort of system, and do think they bring another dimension to the game as well as the entertainment value. I'll be happy if they keep them (just not in the new crap format) or if they revert back to just a league system
Floating Fox Posted 11 February 2009 Posted 11 February 2009 Leauge > Union even with the tosh they've brought in. Much better sport.
David O'Leary Posted 11 February 2009 Posted 11 February 2009 I find League far more entertaining, it's much faster and flows better than Union. Although I do like a bit of Union occasionally.
Sparky Posted 11 February 2009 Posted 11 February 2009 Union shits on league , only anti tigers morons think otherwise
welck12 Posted 11 February 2009 Posted 11 February 2009 Internationally it has to be Union, but domestically its league all the way. Way to much kicking off the ball in domestic union, no flow to the game. At least in international there prepared to run the ball
