AFL Grand Final, This Saturday 26th

This Saturday at 2pm Australian Eastern Standard time, the AFL grand final will take place. 110,000 people will fill the MCG, an awesome sight

I had expected that SOCCEROO FOX wouldve started a thread about this, seeing as his side, ST Kilda, will be playing in the game that decides this years champions. They have not been premiers for more than 40 years, so a big day indeed for them.

They are playing Geelong who have played in the last 2 grand finals winning in 2007 and losing last year.

In case anyone is going to find it streaming, or on sky, it really is a fantastic event and usually very very exciting. Be sure to watch the first 15 minutes, as there is a good chance of some biffo etc early on.

This year will be a wet and windy final, the first time for 7-8 years so it will test the skills of all players.

Some info about the game.

The season consists of each team playing 22 home and away games (which in a league made up of 16 teams means some teams only play each other once during the season).

At the end of the 22 home and away rounds, the top 8 teams play off in a series of elimination games until you are left with 2 teams in the grand final.

Ideally this would be the 2 teams that finished 1st and 2nd however on most occasions this is not the case. and therefore you can go all year unbeaten...lose the GF and not be champions.

Each side has 18 players on the groud at any time (4 reserves are on the bench, they can be interchanged at any time, as often as the coach requires)

you can only run 15 metres before passing or bouncing the ball

you cannot throw the ball, it must be kicked or "handpassed"

you cannot push in the back

you cannot hold or tackle a player who does not have the ball

no tackles above the shoulders or below the hips

A mark (free kick) is given if you catch a ball that is kicked and travels more than 15 metres without touching another player or the ground

a goal (must be kicked and go between the 2 large posts) is worth 6 behinds

a point (through the smaller posts or deflected off hand etc) is worth 1 behind

so... a score of 10.5 (10 goals. 5 behinds) means a total of 65points, but ..

your opponent can score 9.12 and beat you with a total of 66points

If after reading this.. you are no wiser, im not surprised. :)

I do recomend watching the game anyway as it really is a terrific spectator sport.

feel free to ask questions :)
