Players Levein rates

I like the way Levein makes his mind up about players quickly. Playing the likes of Heath and Scowcroft last season was the main reason we went down, we had a nucleus of a decent side which could have stayed up but Adams insisted on fielding no-marks or out-of-position players on a regular basis. Levein has come in, noticed that players like those previously mentioned along with Tommy Wright are just not good enough while Walker, Dabizas and Gillespie weren't value for money and not a long-term solution even if he did like them.

There are a lot of options for us, as the stream of players we have been linked with suggests. The main thing though is that of Levein's 7 transfers so far (Taylor, Kenton, Maybury, McCarthy, Hughes, de Vries and Moore), the majority have improved the side. As has been said lots of times about de Vries, he needs a proper pre-season to get himself fit and then we'll see whether he's up to it and you can be damn sure of one thing: if he's not then Levein will put aside any favouritism and ship him out sharpish. The proof of this is his attitude towards Dabizas, Nalis and Gillespie: all for the long-term good of the club.

Personally, I thought Micky Adams' signings were largely pretty good last summer (Keown, Gudjonsson, Williams, Dublin and Connolly) at the time but they've all been disappointing. At least we know Levein has a strict idea in his mind of what we need, whereas Adams seemed to go around signing whoever he could. Levein will be meticulous in picking the right players for us in the right positions and if they improve the level of the team and reduce the average age as much as 3 of his 4 permanent transfers in (Maybury, McCarthy and Hughes) have, then there will be optimism for all of us.

Excellent post.

I trust Levein whole heartedly to bring in good players in the summer, that doesn't mean to say every signing will be great but no manager in the world has never brought a duff player.
