There was only one thing he was ever going to be: a first-class centre-back.

Then, at 16, he got a back injury. For a year his father, who runs a plastics business, drove him from Northampton to Leicester every day for treatment. Eventually, he returned to action. But it wasn't the same – the pace, confidence and hunger had gone. Leicester City released him.
