The NRL (National Rugby League) is our second biggest footballing code (after AFL) but its strength lies mainly in NSW and Qld. The Melbourne Storm were a NRL team built to put into Melbourne the home of AFL to increase the interest of the game across the country, the Storm quickly became the dominant club winning the premierships and topping the league since their inception. The NRL has a salary cap... but, the Storm ran 2 sets of books paid the players in shonky side dealings and has now been caught. storm well worth a read to see how crooked the game can be at the highest level (oh.. News Ltd own the Storm)
JimmyK Posted 23 April 2010 Posted 23 April 2010 Yeah it's getting a lot of attention here in NZ as well. League (along with football - as in association, not aussie rules, which gets no coverage at all here) is definitely growing in popularity this side of the Tasman and this is big news. Don't a lot of teams dodge around salary caps anyway? I was told that many rugby teams in the UK got around them in various ways, like having sponsors pay players instead etc.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 26 April 2010 Posted 26 April 2010 I've been a Melbourne Storm supporter since they were established and usually go to about 5-6 games a year including finals games. Last nights game was the loudest and best i've ever been to. The players are playing for nothing this year but were playing for pride and smashed New Zealand 40-6. The players were really emotional during and after the game but it just shows that the club has plenty of character and will survive.

Well, IMO, there are a couple of very strong reasons... 1) These guys got caught, it is generally accepted or at least assumed that more than one club is doing it. 2) Every season that the Storm have been cheating... is now pointless... every game they played is affected.. EVERY teams position in the table is affected. Every fan has lost out because of the salary cap. (now ..even the Storm fans have lost out) Effectively the entire "competition" has been fixed for the past 5 years. What a waste for every player and fan! Salary caps and "drafts" fix competitions.. even if the clubs arent "cheating".
