Guest Bilo Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Four FC Metz fans arrested because of Anti-Nazi banner Posted 26/10/10 On Friday 22nd October, during the match between FC Metz vs. SCO Angers, four Metz fans were arrested and kept in custody for 20 hours simply for displaying a "GEGEN NAZIS" (German for "Against Nazis") flag in the stadium. They are due to be tried by a French Court in mid-November for "displaying a nazi symbol during a football game". Until then, the fans have to report to the local police station once a week. To make things worse, the football club FC Metz is supporting the prosecution of the supporters on the case and issued nationwide stadium bans against the fans with immediate effect. The four fans are members of Horda Frenetik, an ultra group at FC Metz that has been taking an active stance against any discrimination in football via various activities for 13 years already. The banner itself is a very popular symbol of the anti-racist fans' movement in Germany, amongst others. Stickers and banners containing the symbol are even part of the official merchandise of some football clubs. E.g. one of the top-selling official merchandise items of the whole German Bundesliga is the "St Pauli Fans gegen Rechts" (St. Pauli fans against the right-wing) sticker of the football club FC St. Pauli whose fanbase is widely known for its active stance against discrimination. Hence, the reasoning behind the action by FC Metz and the French Ministry of Justice remain unknown, the FSE partner FARE has already called for the proceedings to be brought to a halt and the misinterpretation cleared up. French FARE partner Licra (League Against Racism and anti- Semitism) has challenged the Prosecutors office to explain the rationale.
