Luke O'Neill on trial at Lincoln

Lincoln City boss Steve Tilson is casting his eye over Leicester City right-back Luke O'Neill as he attempts to strengthen a threadbare squad.

The 19-year-old, who has played three games for the Foxes since progressing from the club's academy in 2008, joined the Imps on trial earlier this week and will be put through his paces by Tilson and assistant-boss Paul Brush.

The Slough-born teenager spent a one-month loan spell with League One side Tranmere last season, playing four matches and was part of the Leicester youth side that won the Premier Academy League in the 2006-07 campaign and he is also a former England Under-17 international.

Tranmere boss Les Parry raved about O'Neill last season when clinching his loan move, saying: 'Luke`s experience is limited, but he is a good defender and I don`t think he`ll have a problem fitting in with us. I felt that bringing in a specialist right back would give us our best chance of winning the games on Saturday and Tuesday. Luke has played for England Under-17s as well as Leicester`s first team and has been on the bench a few times.'

He also added: 'Leicester have helped us with the cost of Luke`s wages. He`s only a young lad so is not on big money. It`s not an expensive move.'

O'Neill penned professional terms with Leicester in August 2008 under former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson, who had this to say about the young star: 'Luke is another promising young player who has demonstrated the correct attitude and application since I arrived at the club.

'He still has a lot to learn and he is well aware of this, but his hard work and enthusiasm has helped earn him his first professional contract with the club. Hopefully, Luke will continue to progress with both parties benefiting as a result.'
