Singers not bad, football not good.

Humperdink.

Jersey Budd.

Etc.

Leicester.

The famous clock tower is still on the spot

but everything else has changed a lot

the markets 'White Swan' has disappeared

a shop and plethora of stalls appeared.

The 'Swan with two Necks' of Granby st. fame

the demolition hammer stopped its game,

The 'Bell Hotel' went the same way

It quenched my thirst on many a day.

the notorious 'Eclipse' of Eastgates fame

where scarlet ladies played a game

The times I popped in, just to see

faces I knew abashed with glee.

the ‘Dixie Arms’ St Peters lane

where once I watched a cockerel slain

in the yard, right in view

the crowd amused by something new.

the Pelican Hotel, Gallowtree Gate

always quiet and rather sedate

the town has changed in recent years

no doubt causing one or two jeers

on the bright side let us look

the view the City Council took

in '91 The Haymarket appeared

traffic danger disappeared.

Humberstone Gate is traffic free too

till Charles St starts the buzz anew

Gallowtree Gate you can freely walk

meet with friends chat, talk

all in all we'd have to say

Rome was not built in a day

but the city centre is safer now

so Leicester Council can take a bow
