Benji Posted 4 June 2005 Posted 4 June 2005 I know it's the end of the season but has football really reached a stage where what occurs off the field is more crutial than on it? It seems no matter where you look some newspaper has a story about a big team/player just to cause an upset. To be honest i only read the Leicester mercury for sporting issues on our county as I cannot stand the trollop on national press. However again today the first thing i read is about Viera texting Cole to demand 80,000p/w from Arsenal. What care is that to us? except the nosy people you get that believe it in their mission to know everything about high profiled peoples personal lives. Personally i couldn't give a [insert word] all i care is that teams play some quality football for all to enjoy. It's like the cole tapping up, i mean come on, it happens all the time that big clubs poach the 'stars' of the clubs in lower leagues but as they have the money and 'high authority' nothing is made of it. However now as arsen whinger is the one feeling cheated there is the huge publicity and fines to follow. The thing i'm leading to is that don't you think there is so much more cheating/problems on the field to be dealt with than what players do off the field? Yes an example needs setting when say they drink drive or whatever but now they aren't even allowed to make text messages without a media swarm. The first thing i saw on the news headlines last night when flicking over to channel 4 was 'sol cambells brother sent to jail for hitting a student' or something. What the hell? why sol cambells brother? why not give his name? I would much rather the issues such as the stupid offside rule/goal line technology/diving/performance enhancing drugs etc be consulted with high media attention to increase the pressure for change. These are the things that effect how someone plays on the field and what we or maybe just I pay for in a season ticket etc. Views?
Nationwider Posted 4 June 2005 Posted 4 June 2005 Totally agree with you, but it's the way things go these days. Minor celeb BS sells by the truckload these days, and the papers, mags, TV, internet etc can't get enough of it. Plus it's June, so no football - hence the silly season has started.
Benji Posted 4 June 2005 Author Posted 4 June 2005 true, it just annoys me that the power and influence the media has in football, why they don't use it to make football improve, surely it would create just as much 'readers' as i'm sure the majority of football fans are more bothered in the game than the off-field antics, this isn't some film industry where a celebs life is just as important after all.

Nationwider Posted 4 June 2005 Posted 4 June 2005 I think we're all singing from roughly the same hymn sheet here. The media serve up the rubbish because they know the slags want it. Sure, they make good money from it. I'd like to think the media might exercise a little restraint at times, though. But then there'd be no Entertainment Correspondants. I blame Jackie Brambles.
Benji Posted 4 June 2005 Author Posted 4 June 2005 only watched the intro to big brother but as usual you have to have a big gob or argue about petty things continuously to be in it so went no further
