Jimmy Posted 15 March 2011 Posted 15 March 2011 in the U21 squad again, well deserved FA website Pearce picks big squadMonday, 14 March, 2011 31 named for Denmark and Iceland double-header. Follow England U21s on Facebook Buy Tickets for England U21s v Iceland online Stuart Pearce has named a strong 31-man squad for the penultimate England Under-21 get-together, as the Young Lions ready themselves for tests against Denmark and Iceland. For Pearce it’s the final chance to assess his entire squad before he begins to whittle it down ahead of a warm-up friendly in June prior to the start of the UEFA Under-21 European Championship in Denmark. The top ranked team in Europe, England visit Viborg in Denmark for a fixture against the tournament hosts on Thursday 24 March. They then host Iceland at Preston North End’s Deepdale ground on Monday 28 March. Speaking ahead of the official squad meet-up this weekend, Pearce said: “It’s a large squad we will take with us to Denmark, mainly because this is our last chance to take a good look at all of the players who are able to stake a claim for place in the final squad for the summer. “There are one or two fresh faces in there such as Gary Hooper and Mark Davies but in the main the majority of the players are well known to us and have been involved in the qualifying for the tournament. “Now’s the time for all of the players to impress in the minds of the coaching staff that they want to be the ones stepping on to the plane. At the end of this meet-up I need to be able to make some final decisions about my squad – and I will. “Both of the teams we’ll face will be in the Championship in June so there can be no better warm-up opportunity for us and there will be no underestimating anyone on our part, and I expect the opposition will be thinking much the same about us.” The squad features some regular Premier League players, including the likes of Kieran Gibbs of Arsenal, Micah Richards of Manchester City, Chris Smalling of Manchester United and Chelsea’s Josh McEachran. Tickets for the match against Iceland, which kicks off at 7.45pm, are still available and are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children and are available from the ticket office at Deepdale, in person, over the phone on 0844 856 1966 and online at www.mypne.com. OmnipresentSam Posted 15 March 2011 Posted 15 March 2011 Someone help me, Gary Hooper is 23, how can he make it into the Under 21 squad? He was eligible to play in the qualifying campaign because he was U21, so can play in the other games in the competition.
Haydos Posted 15 March 2011 Posted 15 March 2011 Someone help me, Gary Hooper is 23, how can he make it into the Under 21 squad? I believe you're allowed 2 over-age players in each squad.....I think. Something like that anyhooo.
millzi Posted 15 March 2011 Posted 15 March 2011 Thank you OmnipresentSam. I thought it was something along those lines. I think you are mistaking it for the Olympics football squads Haydos, 'cause they are U23 but are allowed a certain number of over 23's.
