People like Mikele Leigertwood, who most likely hold British passports but have opted to play international football for another nation.

Yeah but you could say the same about Carlo Cudicini, I mean he was/is eligible to play for England, and Manuel Almunia for the matter of fact, but you wouldn't regard them as English. Not sure if they hold British passports but it is almost the same concept.
acooling08 Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 It's a shame. I believe it's one of the largest factors contributing to our national team being next to shit these days.

Yeah it is, like acooling said, it's a big contributing factor to our National team being so poor recently, no way near enough top English talent coming through.
Jimothy Posted 19 June 2011 Posted 19 June 2011 If they were good enough they'd come through anyway. No manager is going to play a player just because he's not English. If all the foreigners left, or never came, we'd have the same standard of National team, and a much worse league.
THFC6061 Posted 19 June 2011 Author Posted 19 June 2011 Yes and no. Those two wearn't born in Britain. Mikele Leigertwood was! The number is still high. I'd have to agree with you there. A grand total of 2,992 players have made at least one Premier League appearance during the first 19 seasons of the competition and just over 43% of them have been from outside the British & Irish Isles. On the one hand, it points to the fact that the Premier League is probably the best National League in the world, with the highest percentage of top class players participating in the competition. While the opposite arguement is that almost 1,300 local players have lost the chance to play in the Premier League because of the influx of Foreigners. During the past 10 seasons, the percentage of foreign players in the Premier League has exceeded 50%, whereas in Italy and Spain they are around the 30% mark. Germany and France are around the 40% mark. Looking at the Spurs stats for last season, 20 of the 37 players used in all competitions were from the British Isles (54%). But those 20 players only accounted for around 42% of the total player's appearances for the season... ... I wonder how the stats for other top clubs pan-out?
