Derby Close In On A New Manager

BBC Sport understands that Derby are on the verge of bringing in Preston boss Billy Davies to replace George Burley, who resigned last week.

Preston have vowed to fight to keep Davies at Deepdale but BBC Radio Derby have reported that the Scot is keen to make the move to Pride Park.

Interviews have already begun, with Gary Johnson (Yeovil) and Brian Little (Tranmere) thought to be shortlisted.

Derby hope to make an appointment by the end of the week.

The Rams soon drew up a list of 50 potential candidates for the job after Burley decided to quit his post.

A Derby director spoke to Preston chairman Derek Shaw about Davies at a chairmans' meeting.

But that met with a rebuff, with Shaw saying: "We would fight tooth and nail to keep him here. We are currently in discussions with him over a new contract."

Davies, who took over as North End manager on a permanent basis last September, has also been linked with Hearts.

He won plenty of admirers after hauling Preston from near the bottom of the table into the play-off final - ironically, beating the Rams in the process.

That would be a great shame for Preston. Billy Davies is a quality manager IMO. If he goes to Derby, I can see them challenging for the Play-offs again :(

Given Derby's finances, I'd be surprised if anyone wanted to go there.
