Wie on course to make john deere cut

Recommended Posts

Hunter Mahan fired a flawless eight-under-par 63 to lead after the opening round of the John Deere Classic in Illinois but it was 15-year-old schoolgilr Michelle Wie who grabbed the headlines.

Wie, on her PGA Tour debut, stole the limelight with a one-under-par 70 to give herself every chance of becoming the first woman since Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945 to make the cut on the men's circuit.

She had a confidence-boosting birdie on the par-five second but nerves soon took over as she recorded bogeys at three of the next four holes.

But two birdies and no dropped shots coming home, including a 15-foot clutch putt on the last to save par, leaves her halfway down the field.

"The front nine I was just a little bit shaky and made a lot of stupid bogeys," said the teen phenomenon. "The back nine was awesome for me, I hit almost every green.

"I feel I can improve a lot on the front nine, and hopefully I can do that tomorrow."

Meanwhile Mahan, who started on the 10th, birdied two of his first three holes and then rattled off three successive birdies from the 14th.

And a further three in his final nine holes were good enough to give him the one-stroke lead over JL Lewis, with five players tied in a group a further shot behind.

"It was a pretty easy round. I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens," Mahan said.

"I just had the green speed on the greens so I just had to worry about the lines and be aggressive. I didn't have to worry about too much out there."1313002.jpg

Is golf one tough game?. Just had a dream finish in our club championships: birdie, birdie, par, par, birdie... 17 shots for five holes ..... and still got beat by a distance.
