cisono Posted 11 August 2005 Posted 11 August 2005 My dad smoked for many years, not an overly huge amount but he smoked...3 and a half years ago he was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth (tumor on his tongue) and had to have an emergency op. So now my dad has no tongue so unable to speak very well and lives on a diet of milkshakes. He is also very weak nowadays after having to have Chemo and Radio therapy as well as getting MRSA while in hospital. Stop smoking Craig, all the best. 141438[/snapback] My dad died from lung cancer after 40 years of smoking. He always thought (hoped) that it would not happen to him!!! Although he had always been a muscular and athletic man (with increasingly nasty coughs), he was reduced to nothing in a few months of receiving his diagnosis. Not a nice death either. At first he lost his balance, as the cancer pushed onto his balance centre. An operation found he had already a metastasis. A protrusion the size of a tennis ball formed at the back of his neck. His first chemo session reduced him to a wheelchair. He later lost his voice totally as the cancer spread to his voice box (among other places) and became unable to communicate. He had excruciating pain in his legs and all over his body. Even the strongest painkillers did not seem to be sufficient. Smoking is the worst thing you can ever do to yourself (and others). Give up now! All the best.

Rincewind Posted 15 August 2005 Posted 15 August 2005 Try being an inbetweener. That is somebody who cuts down but goes back to the habit. Recently read a short story by Stephen King called The Ten-O-Clock People. This is the people that gather outside buildings etc for a fag. In this story the main character saw this hidious face in his break. Somebody stops him from screaming and it turns out that only those who had tried giving up could see the monsters and they were some sort of boddy snatchers who liked to eat the human brain as a snack. So Beware when stepping outside for a fag.

Along similar lines, a guy at work found out he might have lung cancer. Within two weeks of going for tests, he had to have a lung removed as the cancer had progressed too far to treat it by other means. I would be surprised if he returns to work again. The tragic thing is, he'd given up smoking just a couple of months before, as his 'smokers cough' had become unbearable.
Muz Posted 15 August 2005 Posted 15 August 2005 Started work today and 5 of the 6 men in the Warehouse smoke , I was having coughing fits all over the place , tis not nice

I also noticed that my dad had developed a smokers' cough not long before it was found that he had cancer. It seems that waiting to get that kind of bad cough to quit is just leaving it TOO LATE!

It is unconceivable that, in this day and age, your health should not be protected at work...
