Mack Posted 5 December 2012 Posted 5 December 2012 I see that Frankie Dettori has been banned for 6 months for taking a "banned substance" believed to be cocaine. The Professional Jockeys Association guy says that there is no performance benefit to riders in taking any form of drug so the testing they do is purely for the welfare of the jockeys and safety of the sport. Surely they could have kept it quiet, told him to take a month off and sort himself out privately and just moved on? If most of the Management people I have worked with down the years had got a 6th month ban for a cheeky toot in the loos on a Friday evening there would have been no one left to run the country!
Guest MattP Posted 5 December 2012 Posted 5 December 2012 He was off his tits at Chantilly for the Prix du Jockey earlier this year when I had a chat with him. Lovely fella though. Racing has to take things 100% serious unfortunately and that goes for everything now whether it's non triers, drugs, betting patterns, ownership betfair accounts. Keeping the sport clean is too important, the regulation of it was a joke up until the late 90's,.

Well of course it needs to be taken serious and it sends a message to the rest of the jockeys around the world. If you one of the best jockeys in the world can get suspended then your local apprentice riding 100/1 shots in a maiden in the bush can. The safety of other jockeys needs to be taken in to account, it only takes him to be off his face and his reaction time off a fraction of a second for him to bring another horse down which could have a domino effect.
