We know more or less what Hughes, Williams and Connolly are capable of although obviously the optimist in me says it will be nice to see if Levein can eke a full season of those flashes of brilliance out of Hughes, an improvement in consistency out of Williams and a few more goals out of Connolly. Douglas will also be important and the defence will be absolutely crucial. We still haven't got huge numbers able to play back there so they will have to stay fit and perform to a consistent standard. Gerrbrand is an unknown quantity but he will have to step up to the plate and the left-back position in particular could prove difficult.

Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrr, I think the key man will be...

MDV.

de Vries was dreadful last season, I don't think anyone would argue with that. However, with this much-vaunted first pre-season in years behind him, we now have proper expectations. It's sink or swim time. Although with the size of his arse he could probably get away with floating nonchalantly on the surface.

Everyone knows the key to winning promotion from this division is two consistent strikers. Look down the years, Roberts and Ellington, Dickov and Deane, Yakubu and Sheringham. If you can get decent tallies from two players you're halfway there. The creativity in our midfield now from Hughes, Williams and Sylla suggests that the chances will come. It's up to whoever is up front to stick them away and we will need a massive improvement from MDV.
