I don't think that's as bad as you think. I've got Danish friends, as well. They said they can understand Swedish and Norwegian. Those three languages are quite similar, I think. Finnish isn't though, apparently.

Its simple enough to read some signs and such, but especially spoken it really throws you. Native speakers can kinda get away with it but there's no way anyone who's spent 6 months learning Danish could go and have a conversation in Norwegian.
