There’s a big chance that our mob will struggle with taking on board the instructions, that seemed to be an issue with Marti. They seem to latch onto the safety first / caution part then struggle to come out of that shell and have any positivity when trying to go forward. Those early goals conceded, players going over for a briefing 10 mins into a game when you’ve had all week to sort yourselves out, Winks gesturing that everyone else was in the wrong bar him (when under no pressure he hooked a ball out of play and blamed it on the non movement of a player 20 yards away from it). There will be a lot of shrugging, pointing and arguing, they’re league 1 players for a reason the decision making and game intelligence will be inadequate resulting in some keystone cops calamities and frustration all round.
I think that's an astute summary. It's a system where everyone needs to fit, or it doesn't work. Which unfortunately is probably more difficult to find at a lower level.

There's certainly a point to be made about the value of intel and how it lends itself to accurately gauging the amount of deterrent required.
It is a necessary debate as to how much deterrent is required and therefore how much in terms of resources need to be allocated, though, particularly when other areas that are more mundane but equally threatening to human life and health exist that also require said resources.
I guess it depends on whether you want a defensive force to defend the UK, or do you also want to defend the Falklands, St Helena, Bermuda, Gibraltar, etc.
Because if it's the former, then UK armed forces as they stand should be adequate. Our island nation is geographically very defencible, it would take an enormous effort to create any meaningful beachhead.
If it's the later then that involves a much higher level of logistics, maintaining a significant presence around the globe in order to react swiftly to any threat, which the UK forces are probably not able to do as effectively as would be liked.

The kick-off countdown at the World Cup matches.
I really hope a player has the balls to pull up short and fake the kick off so that it doesn't work.

Felt like this series went out with a bit of a whimper. The odd task here and there was funny and entertaining, the rest felt a bit meh!
Next series line-up - Chloe Petts, Nina Conti, Isy Suttie, Matt Lucas and Richard Ayoade.
Can't work out how Joanna Page won. I just remembered her being bad at tasks and not funny. Kumail was the highlight of last series, very down to earth for someone who has been in Hollywood blockbusters.
Interesting line up next in as much as I am familiar with all the contestants. Not sure how funny Conti will be without a dummy, but might be able to use her skills to food effect and I don't think Petts is particularly funny. Ayoade rarely disappoints though, but there's always one person who either you don't know or don't like who you end up rooting for.

Eh. Defense spending isn't just for us, it's for nato and we should be capable of doing our fair share. The idea that we'll just nuke whoever steps foot in somewhere like Poland for example is at a minimum, bananas.
Give everyone nukes.

If we have nukes as a deterrent to anyone attacking us, then either,
A) we don't need to spend money on military.
Or
B) we should get rid of the nukes, as they clearly don't work.
Simple logic.

A South Korean court has sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to 30 years in jail for sending drones into North Korea.
Prosecutors argued that Yoon ordered the operation in October 2024 to provoke Pyongyang and create a pretext for his failed martial law bid later that year.
When Yoon declared martial law on 3 December, he had claimed he was protecting the country from "anti-state" forces that sympathised with North Korea. But it soon became clear he was driven by domestic troubles and he rolled back the order in the face of mass protests.
Yoon was impeached and is now serving time in prison after he was sentenced to life for insurrection over his botched martial law attempt. They do know what to do with corrupt officials over there. It's unfortunate that the system allows so many of them to get to the top in the first place, though.
And that, USA, is how you do it!

It hadn't occurred to me that it was cold enough for the heating thermostat to kick in, it has and I'm not even there. As it's June I didn't think to put holiday mode on. Thanks to you resurrecting this thread, holiday mode is on. Cheers.
And now your thermostat is lounging by the pool drinking pina coladas.

I have no idea but it was banned around the world back when it was made.
There are comedians on the circuit who are as 'bad' at anything we've previously seen in terms of being on the edge. The difference now is simply that outright racism isn't accepted in a comedy club.
I'm not sure there's anything in life of Brian that you couldn't say now, but then I'm not minded to think that we're magically banned from saying things.
Tbh I much prefer holy grail
I prefer Holy Grail too. I'm always puzzled, hilarious though it is, that LoB is always the one that is mentioned as prime Python. I wonder if it's more edginess makes people want to be associated with it in order to appear cool?
NB. You can't appear cool. You either are or you aren't.

Mrs P objected purely on the basis that it's June. I said so, if it was 16deg in February you'd want the heating on? If it's cold, it's cold.
But 16 degrees in Feb wouldn't feel cold, you'd be feeling quite summery, especially if it had been in mid single figures the day before.
How we feel about temperature is all relative.

As a break from Dungeon Crawler Carl, I'm delving into What if? 2 by Randall Munroe.
Think of Mythbusters+. Crazy questions answered scientifically. Like how long would it take to drive a car across the observable universe. (Many times more than it's actually been in existence, if you were wondering. You could watch, in real time, the lives of everyone who's ever lived, several times, before leaving the solar system. As The Hitchhikers Guide says, "Space is big, REALLY big!"

The UK’s working-age benefits bill was lower than for defence in the mid-1980s, but since 1990 welfare spending has been higher - often significantly so.
Working-age benefit spend is projected to rise to around 4.3% of GDP by the end of the decade, compared with the government’s , external"ambition" to hit 3% on defence in the next parliament.
Start here imo.
So ...
We should spend more on killing people and less on looking after them?

Does so much need spending on defence though? If anything has been learned from Ukraine and Iran, it's that drones costing thousands can take out ships and planes costing tens of millions.

Is it really common place?
I’d also say of the type of crime we are referring to the majority of white on white or black on black are known to each other personally & will happen behind closed doors with breakdown of relationships the main cause or via gang affiliation & whilst they do happen on the streets they are not random attacks (& whilst life is life if you live by the sword….. etc, hence why we the general public will look at 1 of those incidents differently to the shocking open, random & crazed attacks we are seeing in our streets & shopping centres.
We then have to look at the %s in how often is this happening within what is a minority group.
It’s like having 500 orange balls, 500 blue balls & 50 green balls you would expect to draw an orange or blue ball and just shy of 5% of picking a green ball yet it’s more than 5% of green balls being picked out (numbers used to make the/a point) & that is why they are causing more concern. It’s not “morally” wrong to be afraid of this and call it out.
It's not wrong to call it out. What is wrong is to racialise it.
To use your own analogy, with only 50 green balls around, it's much more likely that the green ball will attack an orange or blue ball.

I think because they can drink it quickly and more of it (because usually less flavour (especially the chilled stuff) and lower alcohol content, people think they're getting more drunk and can brag about how many pints they've had. So they go for Dishwater Black Label or ice cold cerveza. Most of those people have never tried anything else
You'd rarely down a really nice ale in one or two goes. Needs to be savoured.
Don't get me started in Strongbow. I like cider, which is why I don't like Strongbow.
