1) You can ask your network to unlock it. Most networks charge for this service. This charge varies, so I cannot give you a quote, but would not be surprised if they asked you for £30. The advantage: nothing bad should happen to your phone. If it does, chances are that the network will replace your phone free of charge.

2) There are also many phone shops (also online) that offer an unlocking service. The charge varies depending on the model and make of the phone (also the method used for unlocking, which again depends on make and brand of the phone) - usually Motorola phones require you to take them to a specialist shop where special hardware and software will be used for this unlocking. I am not totally sure about the legality of this option (but there are many links on the internet). Plus, if anything happens to your phone, they may well refuse to take responsibility for it.

3) I am told that there are people in the centre of Leicester (in the pedestrian area) - who sell phone accessories - who are also able to unlock some phones for £5. These tend to be mostly Nokia phones (which are apparently the easiest to unlock), but I am not sure what they offer, as I have not talked to them. Also not clear whether they are licensed to do so. I also expect that any problems with your phone arising from this will be your own problem.

I hope this helps somehow. :)

PS: cannot seem to find your phone on the Net... is it really a Motorola v5002?

You need cables to start of with as there is no other way! So you will have to spend something. I got my k700i unlocked for £7!

most Nokias and some Samsungs can be unlocked without a cable.
