Jack1993 Posted 11 April 2016 Posted 11 April 2016 Of course because of our success some people are going to try and pull apart our achievements for a good story, I can deal with that because I can understand that this story is hard to believe but one thing I don't really understand is how accounts can be interpreted in so many different ways, a good example of this is Spurs and their "Net Spend" theory... I'm sure everyone has read about it at least once this season. I do understand accounts to an extent but I'd be keen to know from others that know a lot more than me; what is the best way to determine how much a club has "bought" their current league position? I'm sure there must be a universal way to determine whether a team is underachieving or overachieving and by how much? If outlay on players is the best indicator, why is this so? If net spend is the best way, why is this so? Is it way more complicated than that? Or is their just too many factors in football to get a proper analysis? If anybody could help me get my head around this I would be very grateful, just to add, I know our achievements this season are amazing regardless of this information but it'd be a good indication for the rest of the league too, for example, how much are Chelsea and Liverpool realistically underachieving, how much are Bournemouth overachieving and is Spurs' league position that much of a shock?
Bettsj2 Posted 11 April 2016 Posted 11 April 2016 This is quite easy to say but if we go on to win the league, I really wont give a flying fvck about anyone wanting to pick holes in the achievement.
Guest Posted 11 April 2016 Posted 11 April 2016 I'm a little bit torn on the whole 'bought the league' business. Man City is a good example, coz on the one hand they splashed out massive cash in a short period of time, and that no doubt enabled them to win the league as quickly as they did. On the other hand, they didn't have many other options. We've been extremely fortunate to climb as quickly as we have - coz if we were to finish this season in a reasonable 7th place, you could guarantee that we'd lose players to the bigger clubs. Same would have happened to Man City. A club outside the Champions League will always have to pay twice as much as the bigger clubs for the same player. So it's a little unfair to look just at the purchase price and wage balance as they will always be inflated for a rising club. There's little chance to build on moderate, gradual success, as Southampton keep finding out every season. Imagine how good they'd be if they held on to all their academy players and notable signings from the last 10 years?

To answer your question, most performance analysts use wage bill as a variable/component in their models, so that's somewhere to start.
filbertstreet Posted 11 April 2016 Posted 11 April 2016 only 30 quid on nets, heard Claudio's taking everyone Frisby Lakes if we win the league
