LCFC off-season 2016

I'm usually a bit hesitant to start new topics in the LCFC section, but I thought this one warrants his own separate space - this is what Ranieri has to say about the upcoming summer and potential transfers:

Ranieri suggests summer outgoings, Leicester to "rebuild" during window

On the verge of doing what many thought would be an impossible task when he took over in the summer, Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester success has made him the “Godfather of football”, with every European publication trying to secure an interview with him.

This has become a trend, to such an extent that, despite never managing or playing for Barcelona, Sport felt the need to ask the man himself about the Catalan club’s recent struggles.

In a four page interview with the Leicester City manager, the Barcelona-friendly newspaper covered the Camp Nou crisis (one point from a possible 12 in their last four league games), and the surprising rise of his own club in the Premier League.

Asking him whether, with four games to go and five points clear at the top of the table, he saw his team as champions, Ranieri said: “No! It’s clear that if the leader with our advantage were United, Chelsea, Arsenal of City, no one would question this, but I understand we’re something else, and we need to fight a lot.”

Describing each game as a ‘battle’, the Italian manager explains his side are taking each game as it comes, remaining a friendly unit, rather than getting carried away.

However, Ranieri is also aware of the talk his side could emulate Chelsea next season, and fall out of favour very quickly if this form doesn’t continue.

He said: “This year is exceptional, and we need to realise this. We’re here because the favourites have stumbled so much, and this won’t happen next season. Our objective will be to be in the top ten.”

With great success comes a rise in interest regarding the players in the squad, but Ranieri isn’t worried about losing his best players.

He explained: “When I arrived, the objective was to build a project. This was the initial job, and if there are transfers, because there always are, we’ll have to see how we can rebuild.”

Modest as always, Ranieri comes across as a man who’s seen it all before, but let’s not kid ourselves: if he wins the league with Leicester City, he will enter football folklore once and for all.
