Bassett backs Micky

Adams, who took over from Bassett in April 2002, has come under fire from supporters after a below-par start to life in the Coca-Cola Championship.

But City's director of football Bassett still believes that Adams is the right man for the top job at the Walkers Stadium.

He said: "I know Micky very well and he is no mug. He accepts that our start hasn't been good enough but he is continuing to work hard on the training ground with the players in an effort to turn things around.

"Everyone has been surprised, disappointed and frustrated with the start we have made, but Micky has proved in the past what a good manager he is and I am convinced we will begin winning games again sooner rather than later.

"We have the necessary players on board and the team has played well in patches, it is just unfortunate that several of the new lads who we have brought into the club have taken a little longer to settle than we anticipated.

"But players don't become bad overnight and most teams are accustomed to the odd hiccup or two along the way."

Bassett insists City will come good and has urged the supporters to back the manager and his squad.

He added: "I appreciate everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I don't subscribe to the view of over-reacting. Only six games have gone and there are still another 40 to go.

"As far as I am aware there will be no knee-jerk reaction from the board of directors. They are prepared to allow Micky to get on with the job.

"The idea of disposing of managers after only a handful of games is stupid.

"The City fans were calling for Martin O'Neill's head after only a few games and look what he went on to achieve at this club.

"We need all the supporters to get behind the team at such a crucial time."

City go into Saturday's game at Rotherham in 19th place and with just five points, but Bassett said: "We are like the Manchester United of the First Division. After some good summer signings and an impressive pre-season a lot of people expected us to sail through this division.

"But we are there to be shot at and people are now beginning to realise that things might take a little longer to gel than first anticipated."

Meanwhile, City have signed winger Kevin Harper from Portsmouth on a month's loan.

Adams said: "His addition to the squad will increase the creativity down the right-hand side."

Sorry, no link, just saw this off the Official Site messageboard. We're the 'Manchester United' of the First Division apparently. Although we don't play football on the ground, and we actually play in the 'Championship'. ;)
