Two Leicester roads have been cordoned off as a large scale police operation is being carried out.

Since the early hours Belvoir Street has been shut to traffic and pedestrians with a cordon in place between Stamford Street and Bowling Green Street.

It is connected to an incident which reportedly saw an armed police officer injured after being 'deliberately driven at'.

They are in hospital with head injuries, according to Leicestershire Police's Deputy Chief Constable Rob Nixon.

He also stated a police operation was underway - and since Loughborough Road has been shut to traffic.

Area Traffic Control say traffic is being redirected along Checketts Road.

Police were called just after 3.30am this morning (5 October) following a report of a man assaulted in Belvoir Street, Leicester.

In response to this assault, two men aged 19 and two men aged 20, all from Leicester, have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently in police custody.

Shortly after, an officer carrying out enquiries in response to the initial report was injured in the area of Bradbourne Road.

Early enquiries suggest the officer was deliberately driven at by a car which then left the scene in Bradbourne Road.

The officer suffered serious injuries and is currently in hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The investigation is at an early stage and police are currently linking the two incidents.

A section of Belvoir Street remains closed off this morning while enquiries remain ongoing.
