Gené and Tonic Posted 20 October 2005 Share Posted 20 October 2005 From BBC Sport Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez, 21, from Spanish club Albacete. In August, Liverpool's bid to sign the winger collapsed after the Home Office refused him a work permit because Chile's Fifa ranking was too low. "We have agreed a long-term contract to bring him to Anfield," a Liverpool spokesman told the club website. "However, he will only play for Liverpool once he obtains either a work permit or European passport." When Liverpool originally tried to sign Gonzalez he was recovering from a cruciate ligament injury. The Liverpool spokesman added: "Following the player's knee injury, the original intention was to take him on loan, with an option to make the deal permanent. "As Mark is recovering well, a loan deal is no longer an issue." The right-sided player is likely to be granted a Portuguese passport next June.
