Libertine Posted 26 December 2005 Posted 26 December 2005 Another Joey Gudjonsson penalty secured a point for 10-men Leicester City against Championship strugglers Millwall at the Walkers Stadium on Boxing Day. His seventh goal of the season after the break cancelled out an unfortunate Paddy McCarthy own goal. And despite having club captain Danny Tiatto sent off for two bookable offences, the Foxes finished the game the stronger and also hit the post through substitute Gareth Williams. Paul Robinson was handed a straight red for the visitors in a frantic second half but his side managed to hang on for a share of the spoils. City almost took the lead inside the opening minute when Elvis Hammond found the onrushing Ryan Smith. But after cutting in from the left-hand side, the teenager's goalbound shot was palmed away by Colin Doyle with the rebound just eluding Hammond. Jody Morris shot straight at Rab Douglas from the edge of the area on six minutes before Paul Robinson was booked for a late lunge on Hammond a minute later. A surging run from Smith on nine minutes ended with the winger curling his effort just wide of the left-hand upright. City continued to search for the opener and Smith almost sent Iain Hume clean through in the 19th minute then club captain Danny Tiatto put his effort over the bar soon after. After Smith's trickery had won a corner, Gudjonsson's thunderbolt from 25-yards out was blocked by Mark Phillips in the 24th minute. However, against the run of play, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 28th minute. Alan Dunne did well down the right before squaring the ball into the danger area, but with little on, McCarthy inadvertently turned the ball into his own net past a stranded Douglas. Kevin Braniff became the second player to be cautioned on 34 minutes for dissent. But while the Foxes pushed for the leveller, Millwall's defence held firm and on the stroke of half-time, Hammond was thwarted from 18-yards after Doyle's punch fell at his feet. Gudjonsson came close in stoppage time but it was the visitors who went into the break a goal to the good. At the start of the second half, Gareth Williams replaced Nils-Eric Johansson with Patrick Kisnorbo moving to left-back. Zak Whitbread was cautioned for a foul on Hammond on 49 minutes then Tiatto followed suit a minute later after holding back Dunne. The Australian international received his marching orders in the 57th minute for a second bookable offence. Morris was cautioned just after the hour, becoming the fourth Lions player to be booked. However, the Foxes did equalise on 64 minutes thanks to a Gudjonsson penalty. Referee Graham Salisbury had no hesitation in pointing to the spot after Hammond was held back by Whitbread in the area and the Icelandic international made sure from the spot, sending Doyle the wrong way. However, Whitbread, already with a booking to his name, escaped punishment. But skipper Dave Livermore was cautioned for another foul on Hammond. Ben May and Josh Simpson made way for Bruce Dyer and Marvin Williams respectively in the 68th minute before Millwall also saw red when Robinson was dismissed after bringing down Hammond just outside the area. In an action-packed few minutes, Gudjonsson's shot from the resulting free-kick was blocked and the rebound from Williams cannoned back off the foot of the post and away to safety. Substitute Dyer had a goal chalked off for offside on 72 minutes then three minutes later Hammond's shot was well saved by a diving Doyle before Smith's shot was tipped over the bar for a corner. McCarthy put his body on the line to deny an almost certain goal from Dyer in the 80th minute when he blocked his goalbound shot from close range. Douglas then saved impressively from Braniff a minute later after he broke down the right flank while at the other end Gudjonsson volleyed wide from the edge of the area. Douglas denied Dyer five minutes from time then Stephen Hughes and Mark de Vries replaced Smith and Hammond a minute from time while Braniff made way for Barry Cogan.
