FOXED BY MICKY'S EXIT - KAMARA

Wednesday 13th October 2004

Chris Kamara must really fancy us first he comes out and sez were his favourites to win the championship then he comes out and sez he wouldn't mind the managers job. (wishful thinking Kammy mate)

Micky Adams decision to quit as Leicester boss has left me a bit bemused and I think he was wrong.

I know Micky well and I spoke to him when he was genuinely considering quitting when he was feeling really low after the La Manga saga last season. I told him not to do it then and I still feel the same way now.

Back in March, the only mistake Adams made was not putting a curfew on the lads and I don't think he has done a lot wrong since. They are four points off the play-offs with one of the best squads in the division.

Okay, so they haven't had the start that they would have hoped for, but they have let in a lot of late goals and drawn matches that they should have won. They have also struggled to win at home, but that is just one of those things and he would have turned it around.

Adams: made his choice

So far this season, they have been a bit let down by their disciplinary record, having already received four red cards, but I don't think you can put that down to a lack of discipline from the top. Micky will look back and say that of the four sendings-off, only David Connolly deserved his red card, and you won't get any arguments from me.

I don't think we can blame him for walking away, though. It is not because he is looking for an easy life, he just doesn't want to have the stresses and strains of dealing with the aftermath of a major scandal. If you think back to the problems David O'Leary had to deal with at Leeds, the club never recovered from that, the same could be said of Leicester.

It is a situation that I can relate to because I walked away from the Stoke job. I could see the club wasn't going in the direction I wanted and it felt like I was beating my head against the wall. I knew that my whole career would be taken out of context if I had stayed there. It was a case of the quicker I could get out the better. Perhaps Micky is in the same place.

As it is, people will look at his record and see that Leicester really aren't doing too badly, it is not as if they are bottom of the table, and Micky has been through a lot. He has proved at both Leicester and Brighton what a good manager he can be and I'm sure it won't be long before he has clubs at the door trying to tempt him back.

I'm not one of the people who thinks that Dave Bassett has made a huge mistake bringing in Howard Wilkinson to help him out. They are good friends, who know what it is all about, and they could be the next Harry and Jim - just not as much fun!

I don't think you can write Wilkinson off just because things didn't work out at Sunderland. At the Stadium of Light, he was the manager and he brought in a young coach to support him. On reflection he probably would have done more coaching himself. He was itching to get back into the game and hopefully he can prove that he still has what it takes.

Wilkinson: lots to offer

Let's not forget he was the last English manager to win the Old First Division and he has experience in how to get teams out of the Championship (the old Second Division!) too.

Dave Bassett's decision to bring in Wilkinson to support him sounds like a statement of intent to me: he wants to make his caretaker manager role permanent. If he intended it to be a short-term role he would have promoted someone from the ranks temporarily.

And who can blame him? It is a good job. If someone said to me that all my work with Sky is over, but the good news is that I were the new Leicester manager, I wouldn't think it was the worse situation I could have found myself in.
