davieG Posted 16 October 2004 Posted 16 October 2004 DAVE BASSETT is determined to strike a blow for grumpy old gits everywhere at Leicester City - by beating the super-stud culture that is over-taking English football. The Leicester caretaker boss celebrated his 60th birthday last month and he knows he is about as in vogue as a 1960s suit. But while trends come and go Bassett knows there is no substitute for real class. And he reckons veterans like him and Howard Wilkinson have more to offer the game than the young studs who dominate the magazine covers. Bassett knows he and his fellow 60-year-old assistant Wilkinson face competition from younger men like Stuart Pearce, Steve Cotterill and Mike Newell as Leicester search for a successor to Micky Adams. But last night Bassett came out fighting for the old brigade. "We live in a society of glossy magazines and 'who is the new model on the front cover?' You open the magazine and there is not much of a story," said Bassett. "I ain't much of a glossy model am I? But when you open the magazine at least there is a decent story inside there to read. "But unfortunately there is a stigma attached to older managers in this country. On the continent, in Spain and Italy, they do the opposite. They always go for experience and the younger ones learn and mature. In this country, when you get to 60, like Howard and me, they automatically think that you are past it." Bassett, along with former England boss Graham Taylor, holds the record for seven promotions during his time as manager of Sheffield United, Wimbledon and Nottingham Forest. He was back out on the training pitch this week in the sleeting rain, wondering why he never seems to get the call to save the ship. "I would love to make it eight this season but that is not really the motivating factor. "It is a side issue. My job is to do the best for Leicester City," he said. The Harry and Howard 60s roadshow makes it's first stop at Coventry City today. Victory, followed by more success against Ipswich Town on Tuesday, would certainly strike a blow for pension power at the Walkers Stadium.

I still fancy Strachan even if he is Scottish. I think it would be a good challenge for him at the moment.
