Hutber's Law Posted 24 February 2006 Share Posted 24 February 2006 Does anybody else out there think that our turn around in form has as much to do with the lifting of pressure on the team which happened when Levein left. The same players are getting results where previously they failed to. Kelly has cannily played down expectations both of himself and the team. I think this factor has a lot to do with why Real Madrid have won nothing for several years despite their riches and stellar cast and why Newcastle have won nothing since the 50s. It also explains Liverpool winning the Champions League from 5th in the Premiership where they played without fear not being expected to win but Arsenal with notably superior teams haven't acheived the same and Man U only won it once. steve_wilson101 Posted 24 February 2006 Share Posted 24 February 2006 Think it's more to do with having a manager who has the trust and respect of the players, plays them in their right positions and seems to know what he's doing. Nice idea though but expectation doesn't generally seem to be doing Chelsea or Reading much harm
Nationwider Posted 24 February 2006 Share Posted 24 February 2006 Does anybody else out there think that our turn around in form has as much to do with the lifting of pressure on the team which happened when Levein left. Partly. Kelly's had a nice little run of games to get him started - ignoring points gained, the stand-out result was against Leeds. He's also had the luxury of a fit Wesolowski for three games, full use of Matty Fryatt, and Kisnorbo's rebirth at centre-back (installed there in Levein's last game???). Full marks to him for not messing Hume about any more and getting him back in as a regular starter. As pointed out elsewhere in recent threads, we're not out of the woods and have a few heavy hitters to play yet. A few players are playing at under 100% fitness and others are flirting with suspensions. If Kelly gets us to 21st, he'll have done his job. Hume was a regular starter for about 2 months under Levein. He didn't exactly do brilliant. He had to put up with Hammond. I think Fryatt is a massive part of our recent run and Levein didn't have much time with him.

And thank your lucky stars he didn't have a chance to wreck him too by using him all game for the first two or three weeks, then using him as a bit part player who is merely used to replace the sluggish MDV when things go a bit pair-shaped (this change of course is not to be made before 77 minutes are already on the clock). Vo Rogue Posted 25 February 2006 Share Posted 25 February 2006 I think a more influence has come from playing Fryatt, Wesolowski and Kisnorbo in the spine of our team in the centre of the park rather than The effect of Kelly himself. Young Weso's return and winning 3 from 4 was no fluke and it is interesting to note there are no wins either side of his stint. His influence in lifting the team is a noted factor that Kelly himself dearly wishes he still had on the field to guarantee success.

If Levein was so clever, how come he played Kisnorbo out of position for so long?
Bilko Posted 25 February 2006 Share Posted 25 February 2006 A lot of revisionist thinking here...fact is Kelly has come in, picked a consistent team so the guys know where they are and picks players in their best positions. He is also getting them to relax and enjoy their football. Early days so far but give kelly some kudos...he is a breath of fresh air and nice guy tho he was Levein was stuck in a downward spiral.
