SussexFox Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 Anyone else think that the police were a bit over the top yesterday fair enough there were a few Leicester lads out but there must have been about 200 police on the way back to London Bridge. Also saw a brave policeman tell a little kid of about 8 off for banging on the back of the stand

The reason there were that many police at London bridge was because Pompey and west ham were there aswell, and from what i heard it all kicked off. As mad as this may seem Millwall is one of the safest grounds to go to. That passage to the away end is a brilliant idea. Had a a great day sight seeing in London before the game aswell. Was a brilliant day out again watching the mighty leicester!
breadandcheese Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 I thought the police did a good job yesterday. Couldn't see any aggro anywhere. Never felt intimidated or threatened once. Only thing I didn't like was the walkway passage to the away end. Can't help feel it's trouble waiting to happen. If a group wanted to cause trouble, they could ambush a set of fans and turn it into a tin can alley, lobbing whatever they want over the fence from the hill. As the police are all in the alley anyway, it means they can then run-off without fear of arrest.
holly Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 none of them were helpful though, we needed to either get a bus or a taxi and none of them could tell us where to go, coz none of them were from round there ! i think it was good the amount of coppers they had there my mum was chattin to a steward and this season they have chucked out 130 fans and banned them!! no wonder it was empty!!
TrickyTrev Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 Not really, I though they did an amazing job. It would be a nightmare if they just let all the fans from respetively clubs in unattended at London Bridge.
Ron Burgundy Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 yea there were an awful lot of lads in and around the london bridge area. it just seems to me that the old bill were up on wot was gonna happen and where. so fair play.

Indeed, their crowd control techniques and intelligence gathering is clearly very sophisticated. A couple of thoughts... 1) Who the hell would want to be a policemen? A bunch of pissed up Leicester lads shouting abuse at them for protecting their safety, having to refrain form retaliating at all the anti-London and Old Bill jibes must be infuriating! 2) How much money does that cost Millwall? If they have to fork out for that level of security every game then it must cost them a metaphorical nomb. 3) Were their more police at the Millwall game for less than 20 thousands people than there were at the rugby where there were 70,000? 4) If Millwall drew Chelsea in the FA Cup Final what would happen?

martyn Posted 19 March 2006 Posted 19 March 2006 I don't think they were OTT. I got the London Bridge to South Bernondsey train at 14.09 and there was a definite atmosphere, with Leicester fans shouting at policeman and some abuse flying about between 2 sets of supporters as we got on the train. Babysquad songs were also being sung as we walked down the path towards the away end. There was potential for trouble yesterday but the police handled it well like they should with some women and young kids attending the game.

Thats their job and their overtime pay is massive
matt101 Posted 20 March 2006 Posted 20 March 2006 Thats their job and their overtime pay is massive Where do you get that idea from?
BartonFox Posted 20 March 2006 Posted 20 March 2006 Thats their job and their overtime pay is massive They love it, it's like the May Day marches they get a chance to crack a few heads and bully people. It's a shame it is like that but ce la vie. The various FI Officers round the country get a kick out of 'their' lads doing the opposition lads before they ban them and stick them in jail, it's something to get over their colleagues. That is why so much is allowed to go off in town thesedays, the police sit back and film it before knocking someone's door down at 6am 3 weeks later. The subsequent ban for 3 years and possible jail time is worth the few minutes of public disorder to get these guys away from the game.
