but the sometimes a fouled hit is given as a stirke, right?

A foul is given as a strike only twice per at-bat. You can hit two foul balls and they'll go down as two strikes. You can then go on to hit 15 more foul balls and it doesn't affect your count.

Hope that helps

but what about if a batter has a strike, then a foul then a foul - would the second foul be a strike, if so is this what a 'foul out' is?

Posted

Foul out is when a fielder catches the ball that been hit outside of the foul lines.

The second foul ball wouldn't be a strike, just like a dead ball(no idea if that's the correct term) unless it's hit and caught.

Posted

If there's two strikes on the batter and a third strike is called by the umpire or it's a swing and miss, the catcher must not drop the ball or the batter must be tagged out or thrown out at first base. (confused yet?) Also..a third strike that is very slightly touched by the bat(foul tip is the term) must be caught by the catcher..if dropped it's a foul ball and there's still two strikes on the batter and he's still not out. I would think this stuff is as confusing to you guys as cricket rules are to an outsider.

Posted

I'll confuse you even more with another caveat: If a batter has two strikes and hits a foul ball on a bunt attempt, the foul ball is ruled strike three and the batter is called out.

But simply, foul balls count as strikes unless the count is already at two strikes, in which case the count stays the same. Pitch 1: foul ball (strike, 0 balls-1 strike). Pitch 2: foul ball (strike, 0-2). Pitch 3: foul ball (count stays at 0-2).

As for the "win" stat for pitchers: the starter gets the win if he lasts at least five innings, leaves the game with his team in the lead and the lead is never relinquished. If this doesn't happen, the winning pitcher is almost always the one that was pitching when his team took the lead for good, but in some relatively rare situations the official scorer can award the win based on his own judgment.

"Saves" are almost always awarded when the last relief pitcher pitches at least one inning, inherits a lead of three or less runs and doesn't surrender the lead. There are nuances to this stat, though. A pitcher can also get the save with less outs or in a larger lead if a potential tying run is on base, at bat or on deck. Finally, a relief pitcher will be credited with a save if he inherits any lead and finishes the game with at least three innings of relief without blowing the lead (a pitcher was actually awarded a save in a 2007 game where the Texas Rangers whooped the Baltimore Orioles, 30-3 lol).

Win-loss records and saves might let us get a basic idea on who's a good pitcher on a quick look, but they're really not such great stats:

-A pitcher can have a horrible game and give up 20 runs, but get a win if his team scores 21. Conversely, a pitcher can get a loss despite pitching sensationally. There have been a few occurrences scattered throughout baseball history where pitchers have pitched complete game no-hitters and still lost!

-Often, a pitcher's win-loss record is at the mercy of his team's bullpen (relief pitchers), his team's batters or plain ol' circumstance. Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke has a win-loss record of 8-11 this season despite having decent stats, but the Royals suck so he doesn't get great run support and his bullpen is more likely to blow leads than your average team. New York Yankees starter Javier Vazquez is 10-9 despite being awful all season because his team kicks ass, scores lots of runs and has a great bullpen. Only a fool would say that Vazquez has been a better pitcher than Greinke this season.

awesome, thanks guys - i think i know as much as i need to know now.

except, did japan beat hawaii in the LLWC...

Yes

I've never understood why every Japanese pitcher has to have a completely ridiculous wind-up, and when any of them ever sign up for the Yankees, they magically start to suck.

I think you need to know about the 'Infield fly rule'...

i've never heard the commentators mention this, so i can cope without it :)

So, after 162 games, the dust has settled and the division series matchups are ready:

American League

1) Tampa Bay Rays [East] vs. 3) Texas Rangers [West]

2) Minnesota Twins [Central] vs. 4) New York Yankees [Wild Card]

National League

1) Philadelphia Phillies [East, best record in NL] vs. 3) Cincinnati Reds [Central]

San Francisco Giants [West] vs. 4) Atlanta Braves [Wild Card]

I always watch the MLB playoffs (although occasionally in October, I might flip back and forth from a hockey game). This year, I'm genuinely excited to watch all four Division Series as I think all eight teams in the postseason this year can make a legitimate case for winning the World Series--short series add an element of luck, I really think it's all up for grabs this time (but I will predict a Yankees-Phillies rematch in the Fall Classic).

Yankees-Twins is going to be huge. I lived in Minnesota for a few years and I went to a lot of games at the Metrodome during my time in the Twin Cities. I still keep in touch with a few friends from the Twin Cities, who are all Twins fans--as are my neighbors, so there will be plenty of shit-talking going around. The Yanks got the better of the Twins in 2003, 2004 and 2009, but this time, home field advantage and the Homer Hankies will be in Minneapolis at beautiful new Target Field (great park--I was lucky enough to catch a game there in June).

BTW, Vålarenga, it's nice to see the Yankees' former ancient rivals back in the playoffs (I'll let pre-1960s bygones be bygones). Bruce Bochy has done a hell of a job with a couple of kids sprinkled among a lineup of castoffs, and with Barry Zito in his rotation lol. They've gotten hot at just the right time, and Lincecum, Cain and Jonathan Sanchez are three pretty good guys to have starting in a short series (btw, Lincecum's my favorite pitcher in MLB, partly due to that famous wind-up in your sig). I like their chances to get out of that series against Atlanta.

i'm really excited, i have just got obsessed recently, i found myself walking around thinking about when the next game is on, it's become an addiction - i decided to commit to the giants because i'm a 49ers fan and i watched a few giants games in bars in SF and Santa Barbara - it was tough because everyone i know seems to follow the yankees. giants vs yankees would be pretty special.

but such is my fascination i can watch any team and find it exciting.

so, how many games in the divisional series?

The LDS is a best of five series.

Good on you for picking the Giants, I quite like them...but my greatest loyalty above any other loyalty in probably all of sports is my hometown Chicago White Sox. Very up and down season this year...shame the postseason didn't end up materializing. But then, I'm in the UK now, so I'd kick myself for missing going to a World Series game or something!

Vålerenga, if you're interested, here's the schedule for the Postseason. Only the first pitch times for the first two games in the NLDS are set, so you'll have check after each game to find out. Pacific time zone means The Freak will throw the first pitch for Game 1 at approximately 3:37 am Friday in Norway lol

cheers, i haven't seen the white sox, but i think i was cheering the cubs against the padres last week

urgh, stupid time zones - i have been known to stay up for them, i'm sort of self employed at the moment so i do have those luxuries. failing that, i'm guessing i can watch it on espn america on the saturday...

superb, this is my first post season where i'm going to be taking a real interest.

Now, that was a good opening day of the postseason.

In the day game, which I just followed here-and-there online at work, the Texas Rangers won, 5-1, at Tampa Bay behind a very solid outing from righty Cliff Lee. Lee was a midseason acquisition for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, and he was the ace of their starting pitching rotation all the way until the World Series, where the Phillies lost despite two great games (and two wins) from Lee. This year, Lee has wound up in Texas following two trades, the first of which involved him going to Seattle in a three-team deal and being replaced by Roy Halladay from Toronto...

...Halladay just so happened to be the Phillies' starter in Game 1 against the Cincinnati Reds. And why wouldn't he? Halladay was lights-out all season for the Phils, even throwing a perfect game earlier this year. "Doc" was without a doubt the best pitcher in baseball to not have had a single appearance in the postseason before today. How would he respond to this new presssure? Umm... by pitching a fvcking no-hitter. Yep, only the second no-hitter in 107 years of Major League Baseball postseason history. Bravo, Doc, bravo. 4-0 to the Phillies, who are scary.

As for the nightcap... the Yankees' dominance over the Twins continued with a 6-4 win at Minnesota in Game 1. The Yanks turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 lead with a huge sixth inning only to throw the lead away in the bottom half... but a Mark Teixeira 2-run home run in the seventh gave the Yankees a lead their bullpen--led by the incomparable Mariano Rivera--would hold. It was a reprise of Tex's role last year, when he

to beat the same Twins in Game 2 of the ALDS last season.

The Phils and Reds take the day off tomorrow, which should provide Halladay plenty of time to give a few interviews to the adoring press. The Braves and Giants step in and will play the late game on the San Francisco Bay. Lowe against The Freak.

just watching the end of the rangers game and they've taken the rays apart again, in their own back yard-

jordan, i caught the yankees game on replay today, i thought they made quite a few mistakes, a great comeback but i'd be a bit concerned that it was more a case of the twins being pretty weak :dunno:

i'm still holding out for a giants/yankees final, but from what i've seen it could easily be a phillies/rangers final. mind you, SF are still to play and, as good as halladay pitched, the reds were awful.

urgh, just check the schedules for espn america and they aren't repeating any of tonight's or tomorrow's games the following day...so, looks like it'll be an alnighter for me

so.... it'll be

easy win for the yankies.

highland park still going down nice

now for the giants

I really thought the Twins would put up more of a fight! Without Morneau though, they don't have quite as much power and a rotation of Liriano, Pavano and Duensing isn't exactly hugely threatening. I seriously thought the Yankees might struggle as apart from CC, I just didn't see where they would get good quality starts from. I'd be more worried by Texas though. They have so much quality with Lee as a starting pitcher and Hamilton, Vlad, Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, Young etc in their lineup.

As for Halladay, the guy deserves some success. I sincerely hope the Phillies win the whole thing just for Halladay...a true professional! I really don't know who'll make the World Series out of the Yankees or Rangers and similarly the Phillies will do well to get past the Giants with Cain and Lincecum in their lineup. My prediction though is a Yankees Phillies World Series with the Phillies getting revenge for last year. With Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels, I think they will have too much for the Yankees.

Posted

well, that was as tight as people predicted :sweating:

lincecum didn't quite match halladay, but an awesome win for Tim, 14 strikes, only 2 hits.

shame the giants couldn't take advantage of some decent hits.

hmmm, 6.05am....time for bed i think.

Posted

well, that was spectacularly shit.

giants had bucket loads of chances to win that, wasted them, made some shocking errors and then submitted to a cruel-to-watch home run....

and it's, 7.30 am and light outside....and 2 and a half hours to the city game.

awful.
