Daggers Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Halfords are sponsoring a free bike loan service in London. I know that Amsterdam used to do the same thing, not sure if it's still running now though. Would you use it if it came to where you live?
Newcastle_Fox Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 Bikes would probably get nicked in London and resprayed. Would definitely use it if i came to Leicester, would be handy for getting about town.

john_lcfc Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 how are they going to stop people nicking them?
lcfc_jme Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 how are they going to stop people nicking them? fool proof methods such as putting your name down on a sheet, giving your address and telephone number as well. Nobody would dare to give a fake name and address seeing as the shop are being so generous and trusting

Nobody would dare to give a fake name and address seeing as the shop are being so generous and trusting Maybe, just maybe, not everyone thinks about 'nicking' something just because they could? The system worked very well in Am*dam - people would pick one up from the Central Station, cycle to where ever then cycle back to the station to catch their train home. The bikes are big, heavy and not the kind of kit someone would want at the top of their 'To Buy' list. Everyone knows what they are and so there is no demand for people buying them. The only problem that occurred was having the free bikes dumped in the canal on drunken weekends (along with the rider)
golden gordon Posted 4 September 2006 Posted 4 September 2006 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Plans there were a lot of these "white plans" in amsterdam and the white bicycle plan was just one of them

I know that a similar scheme used to run successfully in Copenhagen in the summer (I guess it's a bit cold for that in the Danish winter )
