davieG Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 If you have a USB2 mini hub will it provide the extra speed if you plug it into an 'ordinary' USB connector or does you PC have to have a USB2 socket as well to gain any advantage?
act smiley Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 USB 1 item in a USB 2 socket = USB1. USB 2 item in a USB 1 socket = USB1. So if you have a USB 2 item plugged into a USB 2 hub plugged into a USB 1 socket, it'll go to USB 1 because its not USB 2 all the way through to the PC.
JadeFalcon Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 it will most definetly not give usb2 if plugged into a usb1 port my advice is buy a usb2 pci card and slot that into your pc
davieG Posted 7 September 2006 Author Posted 7 September 2006 That's interesting because the guff that comes with it says Compatible with any PC with one or more USB ports (virtually every PC built in the last 8 years) Compatable could be interpreted as works with but obviously not at USB2 level, whcih suggests they are contravening at least the spirit of the Trades Description Act. Altohugh I've just noticed in small print "when connected to a USB2 port on your PC." Still somewhat devious marketing. Oh well not that I've bought one, so no loss. PS thanks for the feedback

PS thanks for the feedback It's simple really. The companies that sell parts/accessories for computers assume (rightly or wrongly) that the person buying these parts understands the basics of computers, in a hardware sense. It's not devious marketing, it's a failure to understand the customer. There's a different between being devious, and being stupid. But yeah, as already mentioned, your computer's existing USB port determines the speed at which anything connected to it will operate at. As with many things in life - you're only as fast as your slowest component.

hairy Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 The operating system makes a difference too. XP Home operates with type 1.0 and XP Pro operates with type 2.0. Daft but true.
lookwhaticando Posted 7 September 2006 Posted 7 September 2006 Where we discussing my sex life? Can do if you like... Must warn you, though, I'm not so hot at relationship stuff... and certainly not too good at counselling people.
