cisono Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Yes. I said that earlier. Awww. Here, have a hug. And which one is you?
Knighton Matt Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I'm in the UK and I've got an @gmail.com email address. How does that work?
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I'm in the UK and I've got an @gmail.com email address. How does that work? When did you sign up for it? The googlemail thing only took effect late last year if I'm not mistaken. The website www.gmail.co.uk complained about the name being used in the UK for emails, thought it would confuse their clients or something... and that was sometime late last year I'm sure... BBC News (Oct 05) - Google drops Gmail name in UK Anyone who signed up before October 05 would have Gmail... by the way Matt, people can send emails to you using @googlemail in place of @gmail in your address... try it - email yourself! Experimentation can be fun.

cisono Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I'm in the UK and I've got an @gmail.com email address. How does that work? Yes, they changed it afterwards. I believe they handle the translation from gmail.com to googlemail.com internally (behind the scenes).
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 And which one is you? I'm not the big pussy, if that's what you're thinking. You're right so gmail it is appropriate for davieG I just need to see if it works in Outlook now. Glad you approve.

davieG Posted 14 September 2006 Author Posted 14 September 2006 I'm not the big pussy, if that's what you're thinking. Glad you approve. Struggling with the outlook
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Struggling with the outlook Hmm What version of outlook are you using? It's slightly different from version to version, so unless you follow the right instructions it could go pear shaped.
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Actually... first thing's first, did you 'enable' POP access? Click "Settings" in the top right of your screen at Gmail.com, and select the settings tab for "Forwarding and POP" Select 'Enable POP for all mail' then choose all other settings as you wish. You've gotta do that before you can use Outlook.
davieG Posted 15 September 2006 Author Posted 15 September 2006 It would appear from the Gmail instructions that I have the 2002 version of MS Outlook. I'm having problems with the pop enable. I tick the box and save changes, it tells me the changes have been saved but when I check it they haven't been saved

Suffolk_fox Posted 15 September 2006 Posted 15 September 2006 I use Thunderbird and Firefox - Thunderbird is nice, a bit more user friendly than Outlook/Express I feel. And Firefox is a much much better and safer browser.
lookwhaticando Posted 15 September 2006 Posted 15 September 2006 Now working Thanks for your help What was the missing piece of the jigsaw in this case? I was about to recommend you attempted to change the settings in Internet Explorer rather than Firefox (or the reverse) - or perhaps clearing out your cookies... but it seems I woke up too late and missed out the chance to impart some useless information. Glad you're on the road now, though!

Glad you're on the road now, though! Over the road and two addresses registered. But all's well now my only difficulty is finding suitable unused addresses as I have such a common as muck name and it's not davieG

And Firefox is a much much better and safer browser. Well I have the proper full MS Outlook (as comes with Office 2003 Pro) ... but I just can't be arsed to use an email client, I use the Gmail web interface instead As for Firefox, I'd reckon at least half the forums have switched away from the bug-ridden IE6
