davieG Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I currently use NTL and have several ntl email addresses. Looking to the future I amy be in a position where I dump NTL so I'm looking for some free email addresses. I'd sooner not use the likes of hotmail (already got one of those) or the search engine ones. Does anyone know of a range of free email addresses or is there no such thing?

Do you have any objections to Gmail? I've been using it since June 2004 (only a couple of months after it's release) and it's great. The interface is amazingly simple, if you check email from a web browser, it's so easy to navigate and work with. If web-based email isn't your kettle of fish, you could always check your emails using an email Client such as Microsoft Outlook (Express) or Mozilla Thunderbird. Dunno if that means anything to you, davieG, just throwing it out there as an option. The 'relevent' text ads by your emails are a bit distracting at first, but you hardly notice them after a while. And as far as I'm aware, it doesn't add silly taglines at the end of your emails (to other people) saying things like "Get A Free Hotmail Account Today!" And you get the same ridiculous storage space - 2764MB this morning, and it increases all the time (literally!)

I presume Gmail is google? I do use MS outlook, that's why I didn't want to use a search engine one as I thought they were all Web based. If it is Google are you saying you can use it with Outlook? What's Mozilla Thunderbird? I use firefox, can you use that with Outlook? Sorry for all the questions as you're in a helpful mood any chance of some links? Thanks again.

Only google could do something nuts like the ever-expanding inbox. *Most* search engines want you to use their web based system - because looking at their content earns them their monies. Google does allow POP Email (one of the protocols that can be employed in MS Outlook) - others may do, but I'm in love so I don't bother looking around. So yes, you can use it with outlook. Mozilla Thunderbird is a free email client, works like MS Outlook does. If you already use Outlook, you may as well stick to it - Thunderbird does the same sorta stuff, it just looks differently. And if you use Outlook (part of MS Office) you may as well keep it because the true MS Outlook has many more features (as it's a business-oriented application). Gmail Mozilla Thunderbird Gmail Help - Pop Access - this tells you how to set your Gmail account up in any number of email clients, including versions of Outlook. One thing I should point out... due to some legal battle in the UK, Gmail isn't allowed to call itself Gmail on UK accounts... instead, you get an account @googlemail.com ... which isn't as cool If you want @gmail, the trick is to select your location/language as US upon signup, just to get the Gmail bit, then change you mind later... If you want I can send you an invite (easiest way to sign up for an account I think - no need for a mobile to fanny about with) - then you can play about with it, see if it's for you.
Rincewind Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I use more than one. I have Hotmail for general mail. I have two but it's a hassle changing from one to another. I have a yahoo one for beer related posts. I have one called Cashette for mainly Smallball. A baseball management game. This is free but you are able to accept ads and you will get paid to do it. I've not bothered with this as it's not a main email address. I also have NTL which is linked to outlook express. Trouble with NTL I left it unactivated for ages and forgot my login details. NTL sent me a reminder but it went to my NTL account inbox. Clever. They would not accept my new email address. (the one on their records was different and not functional) I eventually worked out my login etc. Apart from these I don't have any.

Yes I want to stick with outlook if at all possible because I shall continue to use NTL but want to gradually move away so that when I get rid I'm not left with all my contacts/sign ups cut off. I therefore await the invite my email is in my profile I believe. PS can you have more than one address?
hairy Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 PS can you have more than one address? When you sign up you will be given 100 invites. Use 1 and you still have 100. So yes you can have different email addresses but they will need to be in different accounts.

Look out for an invite - as I said, if you'd prefer the shorter @gmail.com address, state your location as US or Canada. To create more accounts (they'll all be seperate from the first account you create) just 'invite' yourself to Gmail and complete the same process again. You can then add these accounts to Outlook as appropriate. When you sign up you will be given 100 invites. Use 1 and you still have 100. So yes you can have different email addresses but they will need to be in different accounts. Precisely!
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Whoops. Your email account isn't visible. The forum here allows people to email other memebrs using a form - it doesn't actually show me your email. Send me the email address you want me to use for the invite in a PM.

lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Got it. Invite winging it's way towards you.
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I can't proclaim any knowledge of the POP (read: MS Outlook) operation of Gmail - because I don't use it. So I can't guarantee anything with regards to Outlook... but my dad uses it for his personal Gmail account - and his Outlook also handles about 6 other email addresses for various purposes... so it can't be all bad if he uses it.

I've created one unfortunately it's given me a @googlemail.com address even though I've said USA, perhaps it can detect where I'm creating it from As for the outlook i'll try that out. Thanks for you help.

Thanks for you help. Yeah, I forgot to neglect that possibility. It's quite funny ... it works in reverse... if I say I'm from the UK, it gives me googlemail anyway... haha. Actually... while I think about it... you may actually be able to use @gmail... see, if someone sends 'me' an email but uses @googlemail not @gmail, I still get it... I'm thinking it works in reverse too... I'm going to try... look out for an email from me in a minute... I'll call the subject 'Gmail/Googlemail Test' ... if you get it, then the world is a much more confusing place than I iniatially thought.

cisono Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Isn't gmail called googlemail in the UK? Aha I see someone noticed... PS: Sorry about the second post. I have such a headache!!!
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 Watch now as I get an email from a confused person going "who the hell are you and what are you sending me?"
lookwhaticando Posted 14 September 2006 Posted 14 September 2006 I got your mail. You can use [email protected] then - tell people that's your address and it'll work... thing is, your outgoing email will display as @googlemail.com... so it's a bit of a mixed blessing really. haha And another thing... if you put full stop's in your username - you still get the emails... as if you didn't have enough flexibility already... haha On an email address of mine... lookwhaticando.uk@gm(*)il.com ... i can put (.) anywhere in my name and i'll still get the email... l.o.o.k.w.h.a.t.i.c.a.n.d.o.u.k@gm(-)il.com will work for me. basically, .'s in usernames don't matter at gmail.
