Rincewind Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 How do you find out which ones are open? Reason why, I bought a phone and srvice that provides free calls and because it is connected to my NTL modem it needs a port closing for the phone to work. I have been on and off the phone all afternoon trying to Explain to NTL but they were no help. I fact when I said it was another company they near enough refused to help. Now they say they are having problems and cant acces the areas that they need to for another couple of hours. The port I want unblocked is 5060 which I was told is the area that is for this type of thing. One tech at NTL even told me they had no ports starting with those numbers.I've had enopugh. 4.30pm but I'm going pub. Even though I've got beer from my trip. May get a pizza as well. Back in a hour.
hairy Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 You need to type the address of your router into your IE address bar. They are usually 192.168.1.? with ? being between 0 and 9. It will then ask you for your password and user name. Once into your router setup you can go into the open ports option and find out which, if any, are open. This may help which is a guide for opening ports:- http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm Make sure you make a note of what you change just in case you have to change it back again. Hope that helps
Rincewind Posted 16 October 2006 Author Posted 16 October 2006 It sort of helps. The router is my IP Adress? My username and password may be more difficult because I may have forgotten them. I shall give NTL a call to see if they have fixed whatever problem they had their hand. I was told that NTL are obliged to give me the information that I want and if they refuse just because I have found a cheaper way to make calls I should call customer services at the place that provided the phone. Without the port that they need being closed the phone will not work.
Rincewind Posted 16 October 2006 Author Posted 16 October 2006 It's working now. Don't know why. I just unplugged everything and started again. Only thing is my numbers changed. The deal is I pay £7 month and all my calls are free. I was not over keen on it because I hardly make any calls, but the sales person kept saying you'll be able to talk to family anytime and its a good reason to start keeping in contact. Whic is true in a way. I should really phone my mum more often. Ididn't before because when I phone anybody the conversation is longer than if they phone me. I'm still paying NTL for Broadband TV etc package so I may keep the line for incoming calls My work doesnt know about this so they cant call my new number which I hope is now connect to my answering machine elsewhere in my flat. I now have 5 phones 6 if I include the fax. Plus 2 mobiles and I hardlyphone or receive calls.
cisono Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 It's working now. Don't know why. I just unplugged everything and started again. Yup. That is what the first line in NTL's technical support manual suggests... Only thing is my numbers changed. Your IP number? It happens at times. You don't get a fixed IP address. I now have 5 phones 6 if I include the fax. Plus 2 mobiles and I hardlyphone or receive calls. The marvels of modern technology. But, perhaps, not very green?
hairy Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 Ken, did you get into your router? F NTL! you can fix this easy. It really is more simple than you think.
Rincewind Posted 17 October 2006 Author Posted 17 October 2006 It was my telephone No. that changed. I never got into the router. NTL didn't want to help said they wernt able to tell me how to acces the ports. Yest NTL do tell you to check things. But I only switched the things on and off to start.. Anyway I said I was not going to tell my work my new number (they call me up on my day offs to ask me to do shifts) but if I have to call them they will have the number on their tel/PC system.
