Low-energy bulbs

Recommended Posts

I switched on the light today just to hear a loud bang which made me jump.

We know that the Tony Blair mentioned that we should all be using low-energy light bulbs in our homes.

Well, Tony, we've been doing for a while, probably saving on electricity costs (not that I have noticed the difference), but the question is:

"are they lasting as long as they are declared to do?"

Although they declare a life of around 6 years, none of them have lasted over a year yet, particularly in areas of more intense use (only only lasted 3 months).

Has anyone had any problems with these?

What brands/type do you use?

(Homebase ones are the most expensive and least lasting according to a poll done in this household  )

I use low energy bulbs, which I bought from Ikea, and they have been going for 3 years at the mo, so maybe your predicament is an isolated one!!

I do hope so, but I have 3 or 4 different brands at home and they've all performed rather badly so far...

(ie certainly lasted nowhere near 6 years!)

Just about every bulb has blown in my house during the year we have lived here thus far. And that is no exaggeration!

The only one not to have blown is my Daughter's energy saving one, so now we are replacing them as they blow.

If it means I have to get my sorry ar$e up a ladder less, they get the thumbs up from me!!

I have a couple of boxes of them and they don't fit my lampholders because the plastic holding the shade on restricts access to anything other than a traditional bulb.

so mine are lasing ages. :P

touching the actual tube with fingers is a bad idea as the oils on your skin kill off the life in the bulb, i know this is relevant for halogen based bulbs

I don't believe that applies to these as they are more akin to mini fluorescent lights
