An interesting thought

If you look at the league table in the championship it's no great surprise that the teams that are doing well are teams that have a settled squad. What I mean by that is that the majority of the players in each squad that's doing well have been at the club for atleast a year or so. Leicester, Leeds, Wolves, Coventry and a few other teams that were expected to challenge for promotion all signed a shit load of players in the summer and have all failed to get going this season, this has been happening for a couple of seasons now.

It's no coincidence that one of the reasons why we got promotion in 02/03 was because we had a settled team throughout and they were players that has all played together for atleast a year, the same with West Brom last season. Levein has got alot of players to get rid of and alot to bring in in the summer and if things carry on the way they have been we might well be facing a few more years in this league.

The likes of Ipswich, Wigan, Sunderland and Sheffield United haven't been signing players willy nilly they've all laid foundations and built a team over a few years and inevitably that gives a team a better chance of success. Levein needs to introduce some of the youngsters soon and build the team around them along with a core of players like Connolly, Williams, Tiatto, Canero, Gudjonsson, Stewart, De Vries and Maybury otherwise we'll under-achieve. The short term fix that Micky always went for has finally caught up with us and I can't see a way out of it other than accepting we can't do things over night and build a solid unit that might take a few years to piece together and get right.

Not as easy as it sounds but a shed load more players coming in and out each season has proved unsuccessful for a number of teams and it will continue to.

The key to getting us back on track is having a leader who knows what he wants and to stick to it, Micky never seemed to know what he wanted and we have paid for it.

I agree; it was one of my criticisms with Adams, from way back before I'm accused of being fickle again.

That's also why it's important to start rebuilding ASAP rather than doing it all in the summer. 3 or 4 signings now, who are gradually introduced into the team to replace those who wont be here next season. Plus a few more in summer and then again next January. What we want to avoid is 12 new players in the summer.

I suppose that was one of the reasons why we got promoted under Adams - We virtually had the same squad from the previous season, except for a few departures.

I think we could still keep the basic foundation of a squad here and sign a few players to get the team geared up in the summer to mount a promotion push, Ipswich have done amazingly well this year so far considering all the players that left last season, they have a virtually different team this year bar the long term guys in there, it just shows it can be done, we will need to do it on a slightly larger scale but, if we start now as DavieG said we should have a good case for being up there come this time next season!

I've been saying that all along. Oops, I did it again!
