Geo V Posted 16 March 2007 Posted 16 March 2007 That's funny cause I just can't find them, even on the fountain of ALL knowlege Wikipedia. And yet every other 'race' I can find record times in no time... Also are you telling me the marathon is raced in the same weather, by the same people on the same hills all over the world? Yet there is still a time asociated with it. The way that the "handicapper" asesses a horses performance is based on who it ran against, the going and the time. Im sure there is somewhere for the average gambler to find all the info but I suppose you must be guided into where these stats are kept and I havent the foggiest. BTW, If you look at American racing they have split times in running by the quarter race mark and they have always been more stat orientated than us. Either way, I like all facets of gambling and have recently given up "normal" work to give playing poker a go for a few months and in between I have a gamble on the horses. Its all good fun and nothing more than that to me although some people take horseracing very seriously and the owners/trainers treat there horses better than they treat there kids!
Phube Posted 16 March 2007 Author Posted 16 March 2007 That's my point... it's just another way to gamble, not a sport. I don't mind it, per say, just people making it out to be more than it is!

I'd love someone to go and tell that crowd at Cheltenham who just witnessed Ruby Walsh ride Kuato Star to victory in the gold cup that they were not watching a geat sporting hero; and were only there for the gambling. anyone who does not believe horse racing is a sport ; mad

Zingari Posted 16 March 2007 Posted 16 March 2007 Well if it was a level playing field, then it might qualify... but it's not... so it ain't!! ok maybe i can't convince you but hey; each to their own i've got a very broad opinion as to what i believe to be classed as sport, i include; darts snooker tenpin bowling etc as genuine sports , maybe alot do not

But back to my horse racing again... Phil 'The Power' Taylor never had to throw his darts from 2 feet further away (even when he was winning year after year) to keep the betting fraterninty happy! Oh one more thing. Most sport followers are called fans or spectators... Horse racing's are called punters!!! punt intr.v. punt·ed, punt·ing, punts 1. Games To lay a bet against the bank, as in roulette. 2. Chiefly British Slang To gamble.

People gamble on 99% of the sports out there mate and football is no exception! Footy betting is huge business these days, especially during the big International tourneys.

Footy betting is huge business these days, especially during the big International tourneys. Around 46% of betting is on Horses (compared to the 95% of olden days), the rest is sports related mainly Football, Cricket is also huge, over £2 million matched on the england v new zealand match on the betting exchanges! Im talking about in the bookies here
Phube Posted 17 March 2007 Author Posted 17 March 2007 Ah, but I'm not talkong about the betting world. I'm talking about the sports world. I'm guessing 99% of horse racing 'watchers' will bet money on the outcome. Whereas I'd bet ( ) that less than 25% of footy, cricket etc. fans bet on the out come. One final thing; if betting/gambling was banned overnight. Which 'sports' would no longer continue??
