Phube Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 "Sport of Kings"... my arse. It's not even a sport!!! It's just a glorified, pompus way to bet money! If it was a sport: a) All races I know of have lap times/course records associated with them. In horse racing no-one cares what the record time for the National is, 'cause only the placings matter!! b) It would be sport first, odds second. But when they announce a win its always... "3-1 favourite..." or 10-1 outsider...". c) And finally name a sport where the best participants are handicapped so that it makes the betting interesting!! You'd never get Chelsea being forced to wear plimsoles when playing Hinckley in the FA Cup. Or Paula Radcliffe running in slippers!! It's just crap and should be banned for taking up too much time on Channel 4 and Talksport!!! Rant Over....

fox123 Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 Backing favourties especially at meetings like Cheltenham is a mugs game (look at results over last 3 days) 18 races - 4 favourites won!
Flexx Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 Theres no point in gambling full stop. You'll always lose more money than you will gain, the bookies always win
Daggers Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 "...and a horse has stormed into the lead quickly followed by a horse and then a big bunch of horses. A horse is coming up along the outside - OH MY GOD! A horse is suddenly running faster than the other horses - YES! It's just overtaken a horse and now in the first three places lie a horse, a horse and then a horse..." Getting drunk and throwing away a bit of money - fine...but taking up so much space in newspapers, on radio and on TV? I don't get it
Phube Posted 15 March 2007 Author Posted 15 March 2007 Honestly, I've never, EVER gambled on horses!! Like's been said, it's stoopid!! It's just when driving home listening to Talksport, you get some prat drivelling on about how awesome the Cheltenham 'Festival' is, or how the bookies have won/lost today!! Like D.Dave says I don't get it, why take up public broadcating... stick to the racing Post, or have PPH radio. Just get it off mainstream!!! What D.Dave missed in his beautiful commentary was the fact that the horse that overtook another horse wasn't weighed down by 6kg of lead, to make it slower!!???

Zingari Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 Completely agree. Bores me rigid. try going for a day out at the races with a few friends ; we do it 5 or 6 times a year and i can honestly say i enjoy it far more now than football matches . we only go to the smaller meetings ( i 've not been to the cheltenham fest , grand national etc ) make a day of it and go to somewhere like brighton and allow yourself about £5 a race ( £30 for betting) about £15 entry (at places like brighton fontwell ,salisbury etc ) the atmosphere is fantastic'the people are really out to have a good time and i think anyone who gives it a shot will want to do it again i'll add that i very rarely ever bet on the horses at any other time and when you see the horses thunder by you with the jockey sitting precariously on top with his knees practically under his chin i think you will have a greater respect for these truly great "sportsmen and women"
marko Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 and when you see the horses thunder by you with the jockey sitting precariously on top with his knees practically under his chin i think you will have a greater respect for these truly great "sportsmen and women" Amen reverend. Totally agree, makes an excellent day/evening. Don't worry all you mardy arses who are dead against racing, the festival is nearly over.
lookwhaticando Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 Mr T is the reason the favourites at Royal Ascot never win. And I'm the reason the other favourites usually fail to win at other races. I say 'usually' because I'm not a terribly good shot...

I was never used into Horse Racing or betting until I went for a day at the races, now I can't help myself I love it. I've only been the once, but really want to go again.
Nationwider Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 A day at the races in mid-summer is a grand day out. I'm not really arsed about the horses - I just get my tips from a relative who's an ex-bookie and then just enjoy a few drinks. I'd agree its not a sport though. My definition of sport rules out anything with: - horses, or any other animal - mechanically propelled vehicles - a panel of judges awarding marks Pastimes, but not sports.

Nationwider Posted 15 March 2007 Posted 15 March 2007 When I become Head of The FA, I will force Chelsea to wear Dunlop Green Flash for an entire season. Man Utd can wear huge clown feet, Arsenal flippers and Liverpool clogs. Fulham can wear skis. I don't know why. They just should.

Phube Posted 16 March 2007 Author Posted 16 March 2007 To everyone who says it a good day out, I believe you.. I've been to the dogs and that was fun too. But to me it's the equivalent to going to a casino. You go for the atmosphere and the betting. The difference is casinos and the dogs are taken for what they are, excuses to gamble away (or possibly win) money. Not lauded as being the great 'sport of kings'! It's the horse people, i.e. bookies, tipsters, commentators I hate.

Rant Over.... a) They do keep record of the times but because there are loads of elements to take into the equation like the going, jockeys, trainer form, weight etc its not that neccasary to know the stats until you get to the top level. b) Odds are always used where there is a gamble and that includes 99% of sports out there. In which order they are described shouldnt mean anything but it is a sport and a big one at that, just look at the turnout at Cheltenham and the amount of people who are employed due to the sport in this country alone. c) You get Motor Racing like F1 trying to close the gap by all having to comply with certain weights on parts of the car and try to leave the majority of the event to the mechanics, technecians and drivers. Horse racing makes things slightly fairer and allows almost anyone the chance to succeed. Im not the biggest horse racing fan as others. I dont know the colours of the trainers/owners or the horses by looking at them ( some do) but there is a place for horse-racing but its not for everyone.

That's funny cause I just can't find them, even on the fountain of ALL knowlege Wikipedia. And yet every other 'race' I can find record times in no time... Also are you telling me the marathon is raced in the same weather, by the same people on the same hills all over the world? Yet there is still a time asociated with it.
Manwell Pablo Posted 16 March 2007 Posted 16 March 2007 All a bi'r arsh on the horses if you ask me, especially when they break their legs.

It's each to their own, there is certainly a place for it otherwise it wouldn't be popular. I can kind of see what Phube's saying though.
