Suede / B Anderson

[The People's Hero]

Brett Anderson is back with a new solo project.

What do we make of this?

I quite liked Suede back in the day - but is it not all a little Britpop?

I'll be checking it out nonetheless.

[Fez of Mahrez]

I never really liked 'em.

To be honest I think new bands are producing better songs than people like Jarvis Cocker, Morrissey, Graham Coxon etc. I'd rather leave them in the 20th century.

[The People's Hero]

I quite enjoyed a few tracks off of Happiness in Magazines mate.

The new Jarvis Cocker effort is pap though. So agreed there.

Morrissey is just plain garbage.

Alright TPH. Sorry to say this but Brett's album is really disappointing. He's tried to create a more personal, intimate album and gone are the signature fuzzy glam guitars that characterised Suede's sound. Instead, there are lots of strings and loops on the album with Brett himself doing most of the guitar work. Although the production is poor on the album, the songs simply lack the quality of his previous work and his moaning about life can get really tiresome. Songs that I recommend are 'To The Winter', 'Song for My Father' and if you're feeling really depressed (which is a given being a City fan), 'Love Is Dead' which is the new single. 'Back To You' is a cracking song but the person who produced the album, Fred Ball, wanted the song for himself and released the song on his 'Pleasure 2' album with Brett's vocals. His version is good but Brett's guitar-based version is much better and hopefully gets released as a b-side.

Always thought Suede and Oasis were by far the best two bands of Britpop - if Bernard Butler hadn't left, Suede might just have been good, if not better than the Smiths given the major development of the band between the debut and Dog Man Star which is one of the greatest records of all time.

Have you heard Here Come The Tears - it's amazing and one of the albums of 2005. Hopefully Brett and Bernard work together again soon for another Tears record.

Happiness is Magazines is alright but thought 'Love Travels At Illegal Speeds' was a much better record.
