Every Sunday they have this puzzle in my local newspaper and I haven't the faintest idea how to do it. I can do even the most difficult Sudoku's so I don't regard myself as dim but this one has me beat any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the puzzle I'm not looking for the answer just the logic of how to solve it other than trial an error. They say it can be done in 13 minutes.

Edit Clarification

The sum of all the numbers in each row have to add up to the number on the far right of that row e.g. the number on the far right of the top row is 15 so the numbers in the other four boxes on this row must add up to 15.

The sum of all the numbers in each column have to add up to the number on the bottom of each column e.g. the number on the bottom of the column on the far left is 18, so the numbers in the four boxes above it must add to 18.

You can only use numbers from 1 to 9 in each box, though.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I obviously didn't make myself clear. I understand the rules I just cannot complete it as there too many possibilities. What I need is some help in the logic of solving the thing.

Oh right, sorry.

Basically I think it's just a case of trial and error. Try a few numbers, if you find they don't work, try another set until you get the right ones.

In the paper they say should be done in 13 minutes or so.I think there must be a logical/mathematical approach but I'm damned if I can figure it out.

from what i can see (and i'm no maths genius....pretty far from it) if you take the bottom row and the left and right hand columns (non of which are completed), the bottom row equals 12, and has a 3 in it, the right hand column equals 29 so the larger of and of the numbers in the bottom row, must be in that.

eg (0 = blank box)

0 0 0 0 27

3 0 0 0 15

0 0 0 0 28

0 6 0 0 18

3 1 3 5 12

18 11 15 29 12

not saying they're right, but thats the only way i could go through it.

The answer is

3129

8497

3519

4134

I used a computer solver to answer this but I would like to know how to do it manually.
