josedob Posted 5 October 2007 Posted 5 October 2007 Anyone on here from York? The Mrs. and I will be there on holiday and they have a home match v. Torquay and we'll probably go as out B&B is just a few blocks away from the ground. Any insights on York FC?

Charnwood Norris Posted 5 October 2007 Posted 5 October 2007 Any insights on York FC? Yeah, there shit and so is York in general. The only things worth seeing are the Minster, Viking Centre (it's a bit for-children though), National Rail Museum and a few medieval streets (oddly called the Shambles) along the castle walls. York is also home to Nestle UK but I don't think your allowed in, not like Cadbury's. I hope this helps for a productive vacation.
Nationwider Posted 5 October 2007 Posted 5 October 2007 If you're looking for some places to eat and drink while you're in York, try these: The Maltings - fantastic real ale pub with good food, near the station. It is always a joy to go in there for a pint. Oscars - pricy (esp the beer), but good food and nice atmosphere inside Meltons Too - really good food here The Blue Bicycle - pricy, but very nice restaurant - and near some good pubs. Lendal Cellars - good beer and quite atmospheric - bang in the centre of town There's loads of good pubs and bars to cater for all tastes. A couple of decent pubs near the ground are the Exhibition and The Minster Inn. Avoid naff touristy stuff like The Jorvik Centre and Betty's Tea Rooms. The Castle Museum can be worth a visit, as is the Rail Museum and of course the Minster. If you have time, do a ghost walk in the evening - historically dubious, but good fun, and you usually end up in a pub. There's one that finishes in the Black Swan, which is also a decent drinker's pub.
josedob Posted 6 October 2007 Author Posted 6 October 2007 Thanks for the tips everyone. Yeah, I know I can't expect the greatest quality football -- but happens to be a match the same night we're in York. Rangers/Barca game the night we travel to visit friends outside of Glasgow - now that's a game I'd love to get to.
josedob Posted 6 October 2007 Author Posted 6 October 2007 You telling me youve came from the USA, and you're goin to see York City?! I'd actually worked up a schedule where we could see a match every night but one. Sorry to report the wife vetoed that plan. We'd plan to see both City games that week (23/27th) but travel plans have changed so we can only make it to the Barnsley match. I've been to a few Chelsea games with friends while they studied in London (one in 2000 and another in 2005). My wife was at the Everton/LCFC game the day the Everton fan was killed by debris a few years ago.
