On August 19, 2007, Dowd was the fourth official for the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Chelsea, during which Chelsea were awarded a dubious penalty by referee Rob Styles. Later in the match, Michael Essien was seemingly booked twice, but not sent from the field of play. However, Dowd subsequently explained that the first yellow card was in fact shown to John Terry and not Essien

Yea but surely Dowd had no decision in the dubious penalty or the 2 yellow cards as he was only the fourth official.

Not for the penalty, but surely as all prem refs are wired up he could have had a word with the ref about the card.

Yea true, but if thats the case then the fourth official should of stopped John Obi Mikel from being sent off and the fourth official should of told the referee that Dirk Kuyt should have been sent off. So mate the fourth official should have no input in the game unless they show how long for stoppage time and substitutes.
